In the world of engineering, where heat exchangers, chemical reactors, mass transfer columns, bioreactors, agitated vessels, filters, and separation equipment reign supreme, one question stands out: If you're diving into Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and you don't have OpenFOAM, what exactly are you doing? Probably staring at the screen, waiting for the meshing to finish - right? ??
Take ASME shell and tube heat exchangers, for example. They're the unsung heroes of chemical facilities, ubiquitous because they are:
And if you squint just a little, you'll notice that even nuclear power plants use the same principle. Fuel rods? They're just another form of shell and tube heat exchangers. Whether they’re boiling water or keeping it liquid, it’s all about transferring heat from a hot cylinder to a fluid.
Yet, beneath this seemingly straightforward setup lies a world of complexity - especially when it comes to calculating transient heat transfer coefficients and the associated thermal stress. Steady-state CFD with finite volume codes is already challenging enough. Now, imagine simulating transient flows with load curves spanning minutes to hours. ???
So, who can simulate transient thermal stress in nuclear reactors and heat exchangers faster than basically anyone else? Well, that would be me. ??
Utilizing OpenFOAM, I tackle these complex simulations, making sense of the generalized Nusselt number correlations to accurately predict heat transfer coefficients (HTC) in transient flows across various industrial applications - whether it's tube bundles, single tubes, or reactor walls.
