Transitioning into a new role or environment can be both thrilling and challenging. As I embark on my own journey into a new job and country, I've found invaluable guidance from the book "The First 90 Days " by Michael Watkins . It has been instrumental in helping me navigate the crucial first days of my onboarding process, emphasizing the importance of rapid adaptation to a new culture and immersion in the company.
Watkins highlights the critical nature of transitions for leaders at all levels.Errors made during the initial three months in a new position can put one's success at risk, and knowing this, I must avoid them at all costs. With today's increasingly demanding professional landscape, where managers face more frequent changes and more demanding expectations, mastering the challenges of taking on a new role is essential.
Implementing these strategies in my own onboarding process, I've utilized a diagram (which you can see below) to visualize a comprehensive overview of the key components of effective self- management during this critical period.
Here follow a summary of the diagram for effective self-management during this pivotal period:
1. Diagnose Your Situation:
Take the time to understand your new environment thoroughly. Immersing yourself in the company culture and processes will accelerate your learning curve and provide valuable insights. Use this information to tailor your strategy and ensure you're on the right track from day one.

Having this image in my daily view serves as a constant reminder of the importance and efficacy of each task, while also prompting me to prioritize self-management from the outset Whether you're starting a new job, being promoted from within, or embarking on an overseas assignment, mastering the first 90 days is essential for long-term success. With the right approach and mindset, you can navigate this transition successfully and set yourself up for future growth and achievements.
