Yum! Brands, the company behind popular fast food chains such as KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, had to shut down around 300 locations in the UK on Wednesday, January 18th as a result of a ransomware attack carried out by an unidentified group. The company, based in the US, stated that upon discovering the attack, they followed pre-determined response procedures, put measures in place to stop the malware from spreading, including shutting down certain systems, and increased monitoring to detect further activity.
As the new year brings with it economic and political uncertainty, experts anticipate that 2023 will be a pivotal year for cybersecurity. They predict that the landscape for cybersecurity threats will broaden and the attacks will become more advanced.
"We're seeing the signs of a brewing cyber storm," said Sadie Creese, a Professor of Cyber Security at the University of Oxford, during an interview at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting 2023 in Davos, Switzerland. "It's difficult to predict the severity of the storm, but it's clear that it's coming."
