Conflict is something most of us instinctively avoid. It’s uncomfortable, often messy, and rarely convenient. Yet, as a leader, avoiding conflict is not a luxury we can afford.

Understanding Conflict Management
Conflict management involves the process of recognizing and dealing with disputes in a constructive manner. It is not merely about avoiding conflict but rather addressing it head-on to foster a positive outcome.
According to Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI), there are five primary styles of conflict resolution: competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and accommodating (Thomas & Kilmann, 1974). Effective conflict management requires understanding these styles and knowing when to apply each. And as if that's not enough...
The Importance of Effective Conflict Management
Effective conflict management can lead to numerous benefits, including:
Why Workplace Conflict Happens
During my career, I’ve seen firsthand how workplace conflicts often arise from a few common issues. Harvard Business Review identifies four primary causes:
Unaddressed, these issues can snowball into low morale, strained relationships, and even turnover. As leaders, we need to catch these sparks before they ignite a full-blown fire.

A Personal Experience: Crescent Jewelers
Back in the late 90s, I was part of the management team at Crescent Jewelers in Arden Fair Mall. Two of my colleagues, Ray A and George M, were known for their competitive natures, which often led to heated disputes over sales. Their ongoing rivalry not only affected their performance but also created a tense atmosphere among the staff.
Recognizing the need for intervention, I decided to implement conflict management strategies. First, I scheduled a meeting with both Ray and George.
In this session, I encouraged them to express their feelings and concerns openly without interruption. I employed?active listening?techniques, validating their emotions while steering the conversation towards a more collaborative mindset.
Next, we explored common goals. I reminded them that both were integral to the store’s success and that their individual achievements contributed to the overall performance.
By reframing the conflict as a shared challenge rather than a personal battle, we began to foster a sense of camaraderie. But wait — there’s more.
