Mastering Colour Coordination

Colour is a Powerful Tool in Professional Style

Colour coordination is a powerful tool that, when used strategically, can set you apart and significantly elevate your style game .?

Whether you're attending meetings, giving presentations, or networking, the colours you choose to wear can convey confidence, personality and even authority.?

With many different ways to incorporate colour into your professional style, it’s helpful to understand which colour schemes work best for different visual messages, occasions and personal preferences.

Today, I’m breaking down the various colour schemes and harmonies from classic neutrals to vibrant triadic palettes.

We'll explore each option's visual impact and how to integrate them seamlessly into your wardrobe and style.

Understanding Colour Basics

Before diving into colour schemes, let's revisit some fundamental concepts.?

Every colour we perceive is a combination of pure pigments from the colour wheel: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet (ROYGBIV).

In the realm of clothing, neutrals also come into play with black, white, grey, and brown serving as versatile base colours.

Keep in mind that contemporary neutrals are great alternatives to introduce subtle variations on a classic neutral. Examples of contemporary neutrals are navy, burgundy, deep olive and forest green.?

Also note that denim, although technically blue, often functions as a neutral due to its adaptability.

The basics of colour. Accents colours consist of pure pigments from the colour wheel. Classic neutrals consist of the shades black, white, grey and brown.

Colour Schemes for Professional Style

  • All Neutral:An all-neutral colour scheme exudes simplicity and timelessness. Incorporating black, white, grey, or brown creates a conservative yet sophisticated look that is ideal for formal settings.?While neutrals offer versatility, adding prints or textures in a neutral colour can bring visual interest into an overall basic look.

  • Neutral with a Pop of Colour:Introducing a pop of colour in an overall neutral outfit adds personality and interest to your outfit which can be done using accessories, a pop of colour in a print, or even makeup. This is a great colour scheme to wear when you need to look formal but have a bit of flexibility to express yourself.Note that when wearing a pop of colour, it’s best to incorporate the colour in two places so that they tie together creating an overall cohesive look.?

  • Neutral with an Accent Colour:Contrasting neutral base garments with an accent coloured piece adds individuality and can make you look more approachable.?This approach allows for more self-expression while still looking professional and is ideal for semi-formal workplaces or occasions. The great part about this colour scheme is that you can’t go wrong pairing any neutral staple with a colourful accent piece; It’s versatile and effortless!

  • Monochromatic:A monochromatic colour scheme involves wearing a single colour from top to bottom, but can vary in shade.?This colour scheme looks very sophisticated and creates a cohesive, elongating effect, ideal for projecting elegance and professionalism. In more formal settings, the monochromatic colour scheme can be done with neutrals (think matched suits in black, grey, navy, etc.). For a more casual setting, you could do a monochromatic look in any colour that flatters you.Experimenting with textures and tones within the same colour family adds visual interest while maintaining a polished aesthetic.

  • Complimentary:Complementary colours are positioned opposite each other on the colour wheel. When worn together, these colours create an energizing visual effect and exude creativity.Combining complimentary colours like red and green or blue and orange can make you look dynamic, vibrant, and high-energy which is great for making a statement.Keep in mind that the more colour you wear, the less formal your appearance. That said, the complimentary colour scheme is best for a more casual, creative and/or easy-going environment.

  • Analogous:Analogous colour schemes feature three adjacent colours on the colour wheel, creating a harmonious yet vibrant aesthetic.?Incorporating colours like orange, yellow, and green creates a soothing look with understated energy, but as mentioned above, wearing more colour can make you look approachable while also being relatively informal overall.

  • Triadic:Triadic colour schemes involve combining three equidistant colours on the colour wheel, resulting in lively, expressive outfits.?Pairing primary colours like yellow, red, and blue will give you a bold, playful appearance which is great for showcasing individuality and creativity.?This colour scheme is the most expressive and creative of all which will translate best in more informal environments and settings.

Incorporating Colour into Your Style

As you explore various colour schemes, consider your personal preferences, the natural colouring of your skin, hair & eyes, and the message you wish to convey. Experimenting with different combinations allows you to discover what resonates with your style and professional image.

Remember, incorporating colour into your wardrobe doesn't have to be intimidating.

Start by assessing your existing pieces and identifying ways to introduce colour into your outfits gradually.

If you don’t typically wear much colour now but would like to, try wearing sprinkles of colour in accessories or prints. As you get braver and more comfortable with colour, you can try out a blouse in an accent colour or maybe even a coloured blazer or dress pants.

Now You Can Go Express Yourself With Colour

Mastering colour coordination allows you to express more of your personality, confidence, and individuality through clothing.

?By understanding colour schemes and harmonies, you can strategically curate outfits that reflect your style preferences and help you take control of your visual message.

As you explore the world of professional style, embrace the versatility and creativity that colour offers and let your wardrobe become a tool that makes you feel empowered. With each colour choice, you redefine what it means to dress for success in the modern workplace.
