Two out of every three transformation programs fail. Change-Management HBR Book
There are several reasons why, which are explored, but the DICE framework got my attention, especially as someone deeply passionate about processes. (by the way, often, people equate processes with bureaucracy, missing their true purpose, which leads to misguided implementations)
So, why do most companies struggle with transformation programs and change management?
One key reason stated by the HBR is that many companies overemphasize the soft side of change, focusing on leadership style, culture, and employee motivation. While these factors are important, they are not the sole drivers of successful change.
Enter the DICE framework, a powerful tool that integrates these soft elements with hard evidence to assess an organization and its readiness for change.
DICE stands for:
Duration?
How often does review of change initiative happens? Does it happen regularly? How long it will take to complete project?
Integrity?
Does a change leader and their team possess the required skills and experience? Does a change leader and their team possess the required motivation level?
Commitment?
Does senior management effectively communicate to the team the purpose of change? Is the message convincing?
Are employees given opportunities to share their feedback? Are they supportive of change leaders' implementation of the change initiative?

Effort?
How much extra work will be performed by employees? Are the employees comfortable with the extra work?

The DICE framework provides a consistent method for evaluating projects, managing portfolios, and predicting outcomes. By generating a DICE score, leaders can gauge a project's likely success based on various criteria, analyzing them by the chances of success; the framework divides it into categories: Win Zone, Worry Zone, and Woe Zone.
What makes the DICE framework particularly compelling is its ability to:
Consider how many initiatives lack a clear DICE assessment, leading to wasted time, effort, and money.?
Don't be misled by the fast-paced nature of the agile world, where we often aim to solve everything within a 7-day sprint.?
"Significant renewal efforts require years, not months". By carefully selecting your key transformation programs, you can achieve faster and more consistent results.
This article does not aim to teach you how to calculate the DICE score for your project or delve into the specific formulas and actions involved. Instead, its purpose is to introduce you to the DICE framework and highlight its potential to support your strategy. Applying this tool effectively requires further study and customization for your specific use case.
Great insights on the DICE framework and its importance in change management. It’s critical to have a balanced approach that includes both the hard and soft factors. How has implementing this framework changed your perspective on managing projects?
