Ever wondered how I approach planning a unit or individual lessons? Today, let's dive into the transformative process of Backwards Planning. ??
1?? Set Clear Goals: Begin by establishing the end goal for your unit. What should students learn, understand, and do by the unit's conclusion?
2?? Big Ideas & Essential Questions: Craft big ideas and open-ended essential questions that foster deep understanding and transferable skills.
3?? Design Assessments: Plan the end-of-unit assessments first. Whether it's a test, project, paper, or presentation, ensure it aligns seamlessly with your goals.
4?? Align with Standards: Identify and dissect the standards your assessments will cover. This critical step prevents misalignment and ensures each standard is effectively taught.
5?? Map Out Learning: Develop a roadmap by sequencing standards and designing activities aligned with each. This forms the basis for your daily plans.
? Pro Tip: Focus on teaching one or two skills at a time during lessons. Dissecting standards helps scaffold the learning process.
?? Dive deeper into this process on my YouTube channel with four instructional videos that take you through the backwards planning process for an independent lesson. From dissecting standards to planning individual lessons, these videos guide you through each step.?
NOTE: Planning for a single lesson is the same process as planning a unit.
