Do you really know what assertiveness is?
I am asking cause in a coaching session somedays ago, coachee was mixing influence and assertiveness. Both are closely connected, and together they form a powerful combination in interpersonal communication.
Assertiveness is the ability to communicate one's thoughts, feelings, and needs openly and honestly, without being passive or aggressive. It involves standing up for oneself, expressing opinions, and negotiating in a respectful and considerate manner. Assertive individuals are adept at setting boundaries, handling conflicts constructively, and advocating for their interests without infringing on the rights of others.
Is a key ingredient for success in both personal and professional realms. Individuals who can communicate assertively often experience: improved relationships, enhanced self-confidence ( ?they are comfortable expressing themselves authentically) effective conflict resolution (leading to more constructive and mutually beneficial resolutions). ?In the workplace, assertiveness is a valuable asset for leadership, negotiation, and teamwork.
How influence and assertiveness are interconnected?
In terms of communication: Assertiveness, involves expressing one's thoughts, feelings, and needs openly and honestly, while respecting the rights of others. It is a balanced approach that neither dominates nor submits to others. And influence: is the ability to have an impact on the thoughts, decisions, and actions of others. An assertive communicator is often more influential because they can express their ideas with clarity and conviction.
Respectful Persuasion: Assertive individuals are skilled in presenting their perspectives without being overly forceful or submissive. They can assert their opinions while acknowledging and respecting the viewpoints of others.
Influencing others often involves persuasion. An assertive communication style is persuasive because it is clear, confident, and respects the autonomy of others, making it more likely for others to be receptive to the ideas being presented.
?Building Trust: Trust is built when individuals feel that their opinions and feelings are valued. Assertive communication fosters trust because it demonstrates a genuine openness to dialogue and understanding.

People are more likely to be influenced by someone they trust, and assertiveness helps in establishing and maintaining that trust.
Conflict Resolution: Assertive communication is a key component of effective conflict resolution. Assertive individuals can address conflicts directly, express their concerns, and work towards mutually beneficial solutions.
Resolving conflicts often requires influencing others to find common ground. Assertive communication, when used in conflict resolution, can influence others positively by encouraging open communication and collaborative problem-solving.
Leadership: Assertive leaders are capable of making decisions, setting expectations, and providing feedback with clarity and confidence. They establish a positive and open communication environment within teams.
Leadership inherently involves influence. Assertive leaders are more likely to influence their team members because they communicate their vision and expectations assertively, inspiring others to follow their lead.
