Mastering Assertiveness: Build Confidence and Confront Fear

Mastering Assertiveness: Build Confidence and Confront Fear

Daily Dose of Integrity

If we combine courage and honesty, we often get assertiveness— we get confrontation.

That means saying something you're scared to say because of the reaction you think you're going to get from others. You think you're expressing something disagreeable.

Generally, cowardly or insecure people avoid confrontation and avoid saying disagreeable things. So, being more disagreeable—honestly disagreeable, not just provocative—it’s a great way to build confidence.

Assertiveness is not aggression. It's not about trying to dominate another person; you're still going to allow others to live their lives.

Assertiveness is actually the opposite: it's about stopping people from dominating you.

It’s like having a fortress. You're not going to leave your fortress to start a war, but you’re not going to let anyone come in and mess everything up.

Assertiveness is holding that fortress wall, saying, "You can't come any further than this.”
