Selling is both an art and a science. To excel in sales, it's crucial to understand the fundamental principles and strategies that drive success. In this article, we will explore important rules of selling and provide valuable tips to enhance your sales performance. Whether you're a seasoned sales professional or just starting your sales journey, these insights will help you build strong customer relationships, exceed expectations, and achieve exceptional results.
Sales is not just a job, what its able to do is teach you quality life skills that you can use in everyday life. This is what it taught me and the below is also a reflection.
Sales skills enhance:
Communication skills
Empathy
Emotional intelligence
Time management
All things we are not really taught in school, so if I were t o offer one piece of advice to teenagers, young adults. Go and learn sales, understand it, and let it help you grow in more areas than 1.
Under promise and over deliver
One of the most effective ways to build trust and loyalty with customers is to exceed their expectations. While setting realistic expectations is important, aim to go above and beyond by delivering exceptional service, exceeding deadlines, and surprising clients with unexpected value. By doing so, you will leave a lasting impression and create customer advocates who will spread the word about your outstanding service. By doing so we have the opportunity to create advocate for us and our brand, which might lead clients following you anywhere.
Treat every customer like the first:
No matter how experienced you are in sales, treat each customer as if it's their first time working with you. Provide personalized attention, actively listen to their needs, and tailor your approach accordingly. By demonstrating genuine care and making them feel valued, you create a memorable experience that sets you apart from your competitors. The reason this is so important to mention, is so many sales teams or people become complacent in the process, in there product and in there abilities that they create a mindset of “this is easy” which show a customer you don’t care and you will end up losing more clients than you win.
Go the extra mile:
To truly differentiate yourself, be willing to do the 1% that others won't. Anticipate your clients' needs and proactively address them. Whether it's providing additional resources, offering exceptional after-sales support, or offering personalized recommendations, show your clients that you are dedicated to their success. Doing the little 1% actions will have more affect on your clients moral and most likely put them in to a buying mood or gravitate towards you as their choice. It could be as simple as getting them a bottle of water, something that you might not see as important however it shows them your thinking about them, helping them make themselves at home in your (Buying Environment). Do things that other people won’t or aren’t willing to do and you will succeed. ?
Create advocates and build reputation:
Satisfied customers can become your most valuable marketing asset. Strive to create advocates who are enthusiastic about your product or service. Delight them with exceptional experiences, exceed their expectations, and encourage them to share their positive experiences with others. Building a solid reputation through word-of-mouth referrals can significantly impact your sales success. Something I relate this to quite a lot is this – say you have seen a movie, read a book, or gone to a restaurant. If you and I don’t like each other or don’t really know each other very well and I go to talk about and recommend said book or movie, you are most likely not going to both looking at it or taking interest. However, on the other hand. Say we get on quite well and have the connection. When I go to mention the book, movie, or restaurant. You will more than likely go and get it, look and see for yourself. Now it seems basic, but that’s really how easy sales can be when you build rapport and do the little things throughout the process.
Guide clients to the best solution:
While clients may not always know what they need or want, it's your responsibility as a sales professional to guide them towards the product or service that best suits their needs. Understand their pain points, ask probing questions, and provide tailored solutions. By acting as a trusted advisor, you establish credibility and build long-term relationships based on mutual success. To many people lead clients to a direction that best suits them and the sales for benefits, while I don’t hate this. I do believe its in everyone’s best interest to do the right thing, provide all the right information and guide your clients to a buying solution that is win win win. I’ve seen to many deals go in the favour of salespeople and then the client ends up in a bad spot later on.
Master objection handling:
Objections are a natural part of the sales process. To handle objections effectively, understand the flow of conversation, actively listen, and empathize with your prospects. Anticipate common objections and be prepared with persuasive responses that address their concerns. Handling objections confidently and professionally positions you as a problem solver and instils confidence in your prospects. You need to understand the flow of conversation and be ready, never talk or answer to fast, but you should know your conversations like tree branches. What do I mean by this, well not two customers are the same nor two deals. Some may say the same things or be looking at a similar scenario, but I guarantee you if you work every client the same or situation, you will most likely lose more than you win. No cookie cutter tactics. Be prepared and well educated, but without being egotistical.
Be memorable:
Stand out from the competition by creating a memorable experience for your clients. Whether it's through personalized thank-you notes, small gestures, or exceptional customer service, leave a positive and lasting impression. Your clients will not only remember you but also become more likely to recommend your business or product to others. Again, referrals and building advocates within your sales career will skyrocket your journey and have people talking about you, which is what you want. Build up your client base like a business, Know, Like & Trust. This section also relates back to doing the 1% things, these will make you memorable.
Consistent communication:
Effective communication is vital throughout the sales process. Maintain regular contact with your prospects and clients, providing updates, answering queries, and offering valuable insights. Consistent communication builds trust keeps your brand top of mind and ensure a smooth and successful sales journey. If you don’t communicate effectively at the introduction, presentation or closing parts of your sale, or even the delivery stage. This effort will be noticed, unfortunately for us as humans. We are far more likely to react to something negative then we are something positive, so you do have to be on the right side of your communication skills. Be effective in your communication, tactful in your approach but be consistent. Don’t set an expectation then not meet it or fail to follow through as you get further down the sale trail.
Never assume:
Assumptions can lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities. Always seek clarification and avoid making assumptions about your clients' needs, preferences, or priorities. Ask open-ended questions and actively listen to gather accurate information. This approach will enable you to tailor your sales approach effectively and cater to their specific requirements.?Now, do we judge a book by its cover in sales? Unfortunately, so many do, and it loses them a sales, an opportunity or more. Have you ever looked at someone and what they are wearing and judged them by thinking they aren’t worth much or can’t afford your product? Well, you need to stop or get out of sales. Because if you’re not asking the right questions, how do you know? How can you determine an outcome without prior introduction. I’ve met plenty of people who have stacks of money and dress simply, those who don’t show off are the ones that get you. Never assume, its that simple. Because you will miss out. ?
Treat every client as if they deserve a fairy-tale experience. Strive to create excitement and delight when they receive or use your product. Personalize your interactions and go the extra mile to ensure they feel special and valued. Pay attention to the little details, such as packaging, presentation, or customization options, that can enhance their overall experience. By delivering a fairy-tale experience, you create a sense of joy and satisfaction that will leave a lasting impression. Sales success goes beyond individual transactions. Focus on building long-lasting relationships with your clients. Invest time in getting to know them on a personal level, understand their goals and aspirations, and consistently provide value even after the sale. Building strong connections fosters loyalty and opens doors for future opportunities and referrals. Now this can be said to also contacting your past clients for just a chat and check in on them. This not only gets you talking to them, but it also helps them feel like not every time you call you are trying to sell them something.
Don't limit your communication with clients to sales-related matters. Occasionally, make a point to reach out and check in on them without any ulterior motives. Show genuine interest in their well-being, ask about their progress, and offer any support or assistance they might need. These check-in calls strengthen relationships and demonstrate that you care beyond making a sale.

Sales has changed over the years, there used to be the dog eat dog and hard sell back 20-50 years ago. But for most people in a buying environment this tactic just doesn’t work anymore. You need to have some heart, empathy, and genuine authenticity to your work. Be the reason smiles that day because of how you’ve looked after them.
These rules are not teaching you how to sell, they are not sales training. This is simply something I’ve identified through my vast experience and have trialled the ups and downs of sales. People are more educated now, stop trying to pull the wool over someone’s eyes in your benefit.
