High-stakes situations have a way of rattling even the most seasoned professionals. Whether you're about to negotiate a pivotal deal, lead a game-changing meeting, or step into a difficult conversation with someone you dread speaking to, there's no denying that the pressure is real. And let's be honest, this is often where we find ourselves struggling the most—staying composed, persuasive, and in control.
But here’s the thing: it's not just about good communication. If it were, we'd all be master negotiators, effortlessly sailing through every challenge. The truth is that mastering persuasion in these moments requires a calmness that allows you to think clearly, respond thoughtfully, and ultimately steer the conversation in the direction you want. So, how do you keep your cool when the heat is on?
Staying Composed in High-Stakes Moments
When the pressure is turned up high, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Your palms might get sweaty, your heart races, and your mind scrambles for the right words. We've all been there. But the good news is that staying composed is a skill you can develop—and it starts with managing both your internal and external state.
Control Your Inner World
In high-stakes moments, your body tends to go into fight-or-flight mode. It’s instinctual, but it doesn’t exactly help when you’re trying to project confidence and maintain your composure. So, how do you override this response?
Enter the magic of breathing. Yes, breathing! I know it sounds basic, but it works wonders. Taking a few deep, mindful breaths activates your parasympathetic nervous system—the part that helps calm you down. Inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly sends a message to your brain that everything’s under control, even when your heart feels like it’s racing a marathon. Just a few moments of focused breathing, before you walk into the room or start a tough conversation, can dramatically shift your state.
Another fantastic technique? Visualisation. No, it’s not about pretending you’re sipping pi?a coladas on a beach while in the middle of a boardroom showdown (though I wish!) Instead, it’s about mentally rehearsing how you want the scenario to unfold. Picture yourself walking through the conversation with confidence, hitting the key points, and steering the discussion exactly where you want it to go. Studies show that athletes do this all the time, and guess what—it works for us non-athletes too.
Personally, this technique has been a game-changer for me. Before stepping into a big meeting or preparing for a speaking engagement, I always take a few moments to close my eyes and visualise the outcome I want. Not only does it help with nerves, but it also boosts my confidence because in my mind, I’ve already succeeded before I’ve even started.
Manage Your External Response
It’s not just what’s going on inside that matters—your external response plays a huge role in how you're perceived. And let’s face it, people are watching. They’re taking cues from your body language, tone of voice, and even your posture to gauge how confident and composed you really are.
A simple trick to remember: Your body affects your mind just as much as your mind affects your body. Ever noticed how standing tall and smiling can instantly lift your mood? That’s because our physical state sends signals back to our brain. So, in high-stakes moments, make sure to keep your shoulders back, your chin up, and maintain open body language. Avoid crossing your arms, which can make you seem closed off or defensive.
And if you’re feeling shaky inside, that’s okay—just don’t let it show. Take your time, speak slowly, and stay focused on the conversation at hand. You’d be amazed at how much of a difference this makes. Even if you’re not feeling 100% confident, projecting composure will not only help you convince others—your physiology will also start convincing yourself.
Preparation Leads to Confidence
Here’s the deal: confidence in high-stakes situations doesn’t magically appear. It comes from being prepared. And by prepared, I mean really prepared. This goes beyond just memorising your talking points—it’s about knowing your audience, anticipating the challenges, and being ready to address any curveballs that come your way.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this play out in my own life and career. The times when I felt the most rattled were often the times I wasn’t as prepared as I could have been. On the flip side, when I’ve walked into a room armed with knowledge, well-researched facts, and a strong understanding of who I’m speaking to, that’s when I’ve felt unstoppable. There’s something incredibly empowering about knowing you’ve done your homework and are ready for whatever comes next.

Understand Your Audience
Persuasion isn’t just about what you say—it’s about how well you know the people you’re saying it to. This is why understanding your audience is critical. Think about it: how can you persuade someone if you don’t know what motivates them, what they care about, or what challenges they’re facing?
One of the best ways to prepare is by anticipating objections. We all know that pushback is inevitable, but instead of dreading it, embrace it as part of the process. Before walking into the room, ask yourself: "What are the likely concerns or challenges that will come up? What might make the other person resistant to my ideas?" Once you’ve thought through those scenarios, you can arm yourself with thoughtful responses that show you’ve considered their perspective.
And don’t forget about empathy. Showing that you genuinely understand and care about the other person’s viewpoint is one of the most powerful ways to build trust and make your case stronger. In high-stakes situations, people aren’t just listening to what you say—they’re watching how much you care. A little empathy can go a long way in tipping the scales in your favour.
Be Ready for the Curveballs
No matter how much you prepare, there will always be unexpected moments. Someone might ask a question you weren’t ready for, or the conversation could take an unexpected turn. This is where the power of staying present comes into play.
Staying present means being fully engaged in the conversation rather than rehearsing your next point or getting caught up in what just happened. It means listening intently and responding in real time. When you’re present, you can adapt to the situation as it unfolds, rather than being thrown off by surprises.
And here’s a secret: you don’t need to have all the answers right away! If someone asks a tricky question, it’s perfectly fine to take a moment to think before responding. Silence can actually be a powerful tool in high-stakes situations—use it to gather your thoughts, rather than blurting out the first thing that comes to mind. A well-considered answer always carries more weight than a hasty one. Alternatively, letting the person know that you will need to come back to them with an answer shows your willingness to learn and find the right response.
The Persuasion Equation
At the end of the day, successful persuasion in high-pressure situations comes down to a few key ingredients: staying calm, being well-prepared, and showing genuine empathy for your audience. Master these, and you’ll be well on your way to influencing others with confidence and grace.
Of course, it’s easier said than done. But like any other skill, the more you practice, the better you get. Whether it's practising your breathing techniques, visualising successful outcomes, or simply preparing more thoroughly, small changes can lead to big results.
Remember, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about being present. You’ve got this!
So, the next time you find yourself in a high-stakes situation—whether it's negotiating that big deal or having a tough conversation with a colleague—take a deep breath, stand tall, and trust in your preparation. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you’re calm, composed, and confident. The world responds to that energy, and so will the people in the room.
And let’s face it: you’re far more persuasive than you think. You just need to let yourself believe it.
