In terms of professional environment, it is a crucial part of an individual’s career as it is the inception and the starting point of a career. During the interview, make eye contact, sit upright, and maintain an open and engaged posture. Smile, use hand gestures naturally, and actively listen to the interviewer. KNOW YOURSELF:

As the first step of an interview, it is important that we know ourselves best. Most candidates forget the basic details mentioned on their own resume which can be disappointing and alarming to the interviewer.?As a law graduate, it is crucial that you understand and acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses well. Reference and referees are paramount to give a comprehensive explanation about your previous work experience and academic credentials.

Your resume is the only document keeping you relevant to the hiring manager and so you should know exactly what your resume says and how it portrays your profile to the interviewers.

KNOW THE ORGANIZATION:

Understand the Job requirements and carefully analyze the job description and identify the key skills, qualifications, and experiences the employer is seeking. This understanding will enable you to emphasize relevant aspects of your background during the interview.

It’s surprising to see that most of the candidates do not even know the name of the organization they have applied to.

Be prepared and aware of the process by researching the organization – it helps you to understand the organization and its vision, mission and values and prepare yourself for a meaningful interview in terms of the interview panel and the questions.

DOCUMENTS:

Your documents stand as testimony to every detail mentioned in your resume, hence, make sure you have all your documents in one place and arrange your documents in the order of the resume data so it is easier for the interviewer to be on track with your academic and work records. Arranging documents is part of a lawyer’s day – to – day activities and so arranging your own bundle in a clear manner will let the interviewer know about your skills. As legal candidates you should be familiar with the term “Document Bundle”. Make sure your resume highlights your most relevant achievements and showcases your abilities that are applicable to the position you are interviewing for.

Tip: Do not forget to include a hard copy of your resume in your document bundle.


TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge about your field of work is mandatory in any field and so the requirement is the same for legal candidates as well.

You are expected to have the basic knowledge about your respective field such as the different areas of law, technical terms, procedures, etc.

DO NOT INTERVIEW THE INTERVIEWER:

Do not ask questions from the interview panel – even if being asked to. Questions such as - What is my position/ what is my salary/ to whom I have to report, are management decisions which can clarified in the second round of the interview since most law firms need the applicants to face another technical interview after the initial interview.????????????
