Earlier this month, on 9 November 2024, I had the privilege of attending the TFA Summit 2024, organised by The Freelancers Academy (TFA), led by two amazing ladies, Renee Ismail and Azurah Jan (AJ). It’s their flagship annual event, bringing together creative minds, industry experts, as well as current and aspiring freelancers in a vibrant atmosphere of learning, networking, and growth. Their event has gone from strength to strentgh over the years!
As one of the resource persons in the TFA’s ecosystem, I am indeed honoured to be able to share insights and support the TFA’s cause ever since they started. This year, I was not just an attendee — I was also delighted to represent my company, The Speaking Factory Pte Ltd , as a prize sponsor for their highly anticipated idea-pitching competition segment.
Watching the finalists take the stage to pitch their ideas was truly inspiring. Their creativity, passion, and effort were noticeable, and the competition served as a powerful reminder of how vital strong pitching skills are — not just for freelancers, but for anyone striving to share their ideas effectively.
This got me thinking: What makes a pitch stand out? Why do some ideas resonate deeply with audiences while others fall flat? In this article, I’d like to share a few practical tips for mastering the art of idea pitching, drawing inspiration from the competition and my own experiences in the realm of public speaking and training.
1. Understand Your Audience’s Needs
The first rule of pitching is to remember—it’s not about you; it’s about them.
Whether you’re pitching to a potential client, investor, or competition judges, take the time to understand their needs, goals, and challenges. The best pitches clearly address a problem that the audience cares about and provide a compelling solution.
Tip: Before crafting your pitch, ask yourself:
The more tailored your pitch, the stronger the connection you’ll build with your audience.
2. Craft a Clear and Concise Core Message
When you’re passionate about your idea, it’s tempting to include every detail.? Big Warning:? Resist this urge!
Great pitches are laser-focused. They have a clear core message — a single, powerful takeaway that lingers in the audience’s mind long after the pitch ends.
One way to do this is by using a "problem-antidote-impact" structure:
Remember: Simplicity is key. If your audience can’t explain your idea to someone else in a sentence, your message needs refining.
3. Use Stories to Make Your Pitch Memorable
Facts tell, but stories sell.
During the pitching competition at the TFA Summit, the most memorable ideas were the ones brought to life through storytelling. Stories make abstract concepts tangible and create an emotional connection with your audience.
For instance, if you’re pitching a productivity app, don’t just list features. Share a story about someone overwhelmed by tasks who transformed their workflow using your app.
Tip: Start your pitch with a story or anecdote that sets the stage and draws the audience in.

4. Be Passionate, yet Stay Professional
Passion is contagious. When you’re genuinely enthusiastic about your idea, your energy can captivate your audience. But it’s equally important to channel that energy in a way that feels polished and professional.
At the competition, the finalists who stood out had a confident presence—strong voice, clear articulation, and purposeful gestures. They projected belief in their ideas without coming across as overly rehearsed or robotic.
Actionable Tip: Rehearse your pitch multiple times, but ALWAYS leave room for spontaneity. Practice in front of peers who can give constructive feedback on your delivery.? I truly believe that feedback is the breakfast of champions!
5. Anticipate and Embrace Questions
A pitch isn’t a monologue; it’s a conversation starter.? I cannot emphasise this enough!
Prepare for questions by thinking through potential challenges or concerns your audience might raise. The better you address these questions, the more credible you’ll appear.
If someone throws a curveball, stay composed. Acknowledge their perspective, and if you don’t have an answer immediately, it’s okay to say, “That’s a great point. I’ll get back to you with more details on that.”? This is a facilitation technique called ‘Parking Lot’.
6. End with a Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)
Every great pitch ends with a clear next step.
What do you want your audience to do after hearing your pitch? Whether it’s scheduling a follow-up meeting, trying a prototype, or investing in your idea, make your request for next steps clear and actionable.
During the competition, the pitches that resonated most were the ones with strong closing statements, leaving no ambiguity about the desired outcome.
Congratulations to the Finalists and Winners
To all the finalists and winners of The TFA Summit 2024 pitching competition, congratulations! Your innovative ideas and compelling presentations were a joy to witness. The dedication you brought to the stage is a testament to the vibrant future of the freelancers' industry.
To the rest of us, let’s take a page out of their book. Pitching isn’t just a skill for competitions; it’s a life skill. Whether you’re selling a product, pitching a business idea, or simply persuading others to see your point of view, the ability to communicate your ideas effectively can open countless doors.
So, the next time you’re preparing to pitch, remember these tips: Know your audience, keep it concise, tell a story, show passion, anticipate questions, and always leave with a clear CTA.
Here’s to more impactful pitches—and the incredible ideas they bring to life!
cheers!
