Mastering the Art of Delegation -Avoid Doing Everything Yourself

Effective leadership isn't about doing everything yourself. It's about allowing your team to grow, take ownership, and contribute meaningfully to the organisation's success. Micromanaging, on the other hand, stunts growth, stifles creativity, and can lead to burnout for both the leader and the team members. This is a skill and ‘letting go’ to certain decisions, activities and projects that may not be done as well as yourself. It may take longer and there maybe issues and mistakes, but it will be the only way your team will learn and develop.?

The 5-Steps to success with delegation:

  1. Requirements: Explain the outcome and objectives with specific requirements and timescale
  2. Clear Deadlines: Set realistic and achievable deadlines that align with workload and capacity.
  3. Resourcing: Ensure access to all the necessary resources, tools, and information to successfully complete the task.
  4. Questioning: Create an open and supportive environment where questions and concerns are welcomed and addressed promptly during regular check-ins.
  5. Completion: Clearly define the criteria for successful task completion.

Before You Start Delegating:

  1. Identify Tasks to Delegate: Review your current workload and identify tasks that can be effectively delegated to others that will help them to develop new skills and gain valuable experience.
  2. Select the Right Person: Match tasks to individual strengths and development areas.
  3. Provide Clear Instructions: Break down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable steps and provide clear and concise instructions that are easy to understand and follow.
  4. Offer Support: Ensure necessary support and resources are provided, including access to contacts, training materials, and relevant information.
  5. Trust and Empower: Show confidence in their abilities to successfully complete the task and avoid micromanaging and allow them the freedom to work independently.??

Delegation is a skill that needs to be learned and requires practice and refinement. By following these steps and creating a culture of trust, leaders can unlock the full potential of their teams, drive innovation, and create a more fulfilling and rewarding work environment for everyone.??

Andy Goodeve I’ve found that delegation helps create a broader sense of ownership in a team. People become more invested in what’s happening, understanding that an area of work that is failing can have detrimental effect on things they’re looking after, meaning people are more likely to work better together and support each other
