?? Mastering the Art of Crafting Effective Prompts for ChatGPT

Happy pre-Labor Day weekend to you all out there fellow AI learners! ?? My friend Jose Velazquez Jr. inspired me in his recent post to put up some prompt engineering pointers I’ve gathered over my own learning and training sessions I've conducted. This article will give a basic formula to writing prompts with ChatGPT. Since I know many of my followers hail from military backgrounds, I’ll use a framework they should readily understand. Task. Condition. Standard. That’s basically how you should “talk’ to your AI platform. Give it a specific task. Give it context and conditions. Be specific to format, tone, and whatever standards you are trying to achieve. Because I got five fingers and am a simple ape, I made five steps. My formula (one for each finger Infantry style) Task+Conditions/context+Persona+Examplars+Standards (Format/Tone). This will give you better results, and as always you can expound as you learn more. Let's break this down a bit further.

# 1. Task

First things first, let's identify the purpose of your conversation with ChatGPT. Are you looking for a creative story, programming help, Excel spreadsheet, or maybe just a casual chat? Clearly define the task you want ChatGPT to assist you with. This will set the stage for a productive interaction. There are so many ways to describe a task so brush up on your verbs!

#2. Conditions/Context

Conditions/Context is king! Provide a brief but clear context for your conversation. Imagine you're giving a friend a quick update before diving into a chat. This helps ChatGPT understand the background and ensures the conversation flows smoothly. Whether it's about a fictional world, a technical problem, or personal advice, give the AI a glimpse into your world.

#3. Persona

Think of ChatGPT as your virtual collaborator with a versatile (multi)personality. Specify the persona you'd like it to adopt. Are you chatting with a professional expert, a friendly neighbor, or a curious student? Defining the persona guides the style and tone of the AI's responses, making them align with your expectations.

#4. Exemplars

Show, don't just tell! Providing examples of the desired responses helps ChatGPT understand the quality and style you're aiming for. Offer a few exemplary responses that match the context and persona you've set. It's like giving ChatGPT a sneak peek into your preferred conversational direction.

#5. Standards (Format/Tone)

Where my Non-Commissioned Officers? Standards and structure matters! Organize your prompt in a clear and organized manner. Use paragraphs or bullet points to segment the task, context, persona, and exemplars. A well-structured prompt makes it easier for ChatGPT to comprehend your requirements and generate relevant responses. You could also consider tone in lieu of format. The right tone sets the mood for the conversation. Whether it's formal, casual, technical, or humorous, explicitly mention the tone you want ChatGPT to follow. A consistent tone ensures that the AI's responses resonate with your communication style.

### Putting It All Together/Practical learning

Let's walk through an example of crafting a prompt for ChatGPT:

Task: Help me brainstorm ideas for a short science fiction story.

Conditions/Context: You're a fellow writer, and I'm stuck with a blank page.

Persona: Friendly and creative writer buddy (like my friend Jose Velazquez Jr. ).

Exemplars: "How about a story set on a futuristic space colony facing an energy crisis?" "Imagine a world where AI pets develop emotions, causing chaos!"

Format: Write in a bulletized easy to read list of ideas.

Tone: Warm and enthusiastic

Or what that would look like in your prompt:

"Help me brainstorm ideas for a short science fiction story. You're a fellow writer, and I'm stuck with a blank page. Act as a friendly and creative writer buddy (like my friend Jose Velasquez). "How about a story set on a futuristic space colony facing an energy crisis?" "Imagine a world where AI pets develop emotions, causing chaos!" Write in a bulletized easy to read list of ideas in a warm and enthusiastic tone." Go ahead, copy and paste all within the outside quotation marks, and see the results.

By breaking down your prompt using these components, you'll empower ChatGPT to provide responses that are not only relevant but also more aligned with your expectations. Remember, practice makes perfect! Oddly, your results may vary even using the same prompts (I’ll write more on that another time). Experiment with different prompts to find the style(s) that suits you best. You can upload your own works of writing as well to allow your platform to learn your writing nuances and voice. Keep on creating! Keep on learning!
