As a CIO, preparing for a board meeting can be daunting. But it's crucial to effectively communicate your IT strategies, initiatives, and achievements to the board members. Here are some tips to help you out:
- Get to know the board members:?What are their backgrounds? What are their interests? What are their priorities? The more you know about them, the better you can tailor your presentation to their needs.
- Show how IT supports the business:?How does your department's work help the company achieve its goals? How does it save money, improve efficiency, or boost revenue? Make sure the board members understand the value of IT. All in all, your presetation should be business centric, not technology centric.
- Be clear and concise:?Your presentation should be easy to understand, especially for people who aren't technical. Use plain language or business language and avoid jargons at all cost.
- Portrait yourself to be a problem solver: All your initiatives should focus on the business issues that you have/you want to resolved.
- Back up your claims with data:?Don't just tell the board members that IT is making a difference. Show them with data and metrics.
- Be a storyteller: No one will remember numbers & data, once you are done. However, they would remember a story, if told. It could be little bit conflicting with the above point at first glance, bear with me and I will clear it in a second. You need to learn to tell story via data. There are even courses available on “corporate storytelling” or “storytelling with data”. Its an art and need little bit of awareness and practice to use it.
- Anticipate questions:?Think about what questions the board members might ask and have your answers ready. This will help you stay calm and confident during the presentation.
- Be transparent:?Don't be afraid to talk about challenges, risks or setbacks. The board members will appreciate your honesty. However, don’t leave it there. Show them your mitigation plan and support you need from their side.
- Be a team player:?The CIO is not the only person responsible for the success of the company's IT initiatives. Be sure to acknowledge the contributions of your team and show that you are working together to achieve common goals.
- Be passionate:?Show the board members that you're excited about IT and its potential to help the company succeed.
?Remember to practice your presentation, stay confident, and be prepared to engage in discussions. By following these tips, you can effectively present your IT strategies and initiatives to the board, gaining their support and alignment with your goals.
