Mastering the Art of the Business Lunch: Do's and Don'ts for a Successful Meeting

Who doesn't love a good business lunch? It's a great opportunity to network, build relationships, and hopefully seal the deal on that big project you've been working on. But if you're not careful, you could end up shooting yourself in the foot (not literally, of course). So, here are a few do's and don'ts to help you put your best foot forward at your next business lunch.

DO: Dress to Impress

First impressions matter, and your appearance is a big part of that. Dress appropriately for the occasion, and make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle-free. You don't have to wear a suit and tie (unless that's the dress code), but make sure you look presentable and professional.

DON'T: Be Late

Punctuality is important in the business world, and being late to a business lunch is a big no-no. Arrive on time or even a few minutes early if possible. If you're running late, let your host know as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.

DO: Mind Your Manners

Good manners are always in style, and they're especially important during a business lunch. Remember to say please and thank you, chew with your mouth closed, and use utensils correctly. And don't forget to put your phone away – it's rude to be checking your email or social media during a business lunch.

DON'T: Order the Most Expensive Thing on the Menu

It's great to treat yourself, but ordering the most expensive thing on the menu can send the wrong message. Stick to mid-priced items, and avoid anything too messy or difficult to eat (like ribs or spaghetti).

DO: Listen More Than You Talk

A business lunch is a great opportunity to learn more about your colleagues or clients, so make sure you're doing more listening than talking. Ask questions, show interest in what they have to say, and be engaged in the conversation.

DO: Follow Your Host's Lead

If your host orders an appetizer or suggests a particular dish, it's usually a good idea to follow their lead. This shows that you're easy to work with and can adapt to different situations.

DON'T: Drink Too Much Alcohol

While it's fine to have a drink or two during a business lunch, it's important to know your limits. Drinking too much can lead to embarrassing behavior or poor decision making. Stick to one or two drinks, and make sure to drink plenty of water.

DO: Offer to Pay (If Appropriate)

If you invited your guest to the lunch, it's customary to offer to pay. However, if your guest insists on paying or if it's a business expense, don't argue about it. Simply thank them for their generosity.

DON'T: Discuss Sensitive Topics

Avoid discussing sensitive topics like politics, religion, or personal issues. Stick to neutral topics like sports, travel, or hobbies.

DO: Follow Up Afterwards

After the lunch, send a thank-you email or message to your guest to show your appreciation. This is also a good opportunity to follow up on any action items or next steps that were discussed during the lunch.

Following these do's and don'ts will help you make a positive impression at your next business lunch and hopefully lead to a successful outcome.
