Mastering The Art of Apple’s Simplicity with Ken Segall - October 2023 Edition

The K2 Elite Community and I just completed our first International Mastermind event since Covid in beautiful Vancouver and boy was it an epic 3 days!

The theme was Simplicity and we dove deep into streamlining our lives and businesses to create ultimate focus, impact, and profitability.

We were joined by an incredible lineup of speakers; Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, Scott deMoulin, Ken Segall, and Dr. Shefali Tsabary.

A highlight was Ken Segall’s talk on how Apple used the power of simplicity to achieve its unparalleled success.?

Ken worked for 12 years as the Creative Director for Steve Jobs spanning NeXT & Apple. He is a New York Times Best-selling Author of ‘Insanely Simple’ & ‘Think Simple’ and has served as Worldwide Creative Director at agencies for Dell, Intel & IBM, and more.

Here are 5 key takeaways from his presentation:

Simple is not easy - When something is simple for the end user, that doesn’t necessarily mean it was simple to create. There is a lot of thought and iteration that goes into simplifying. A direct quote from Steve Jobs highlighting this is “Simple can be harder than complex, you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple but it’s worth it in the end because once you get there you can move mountains”.

Cultivate culture - Apple's ‘Think Different’ campaign embodied the entire essence and ethos of the brand in just 2 words and this was evident in not only their products but the team culture as well. The entire company was built around simplification and innovation and every team member worked towards this goal.

Be a minimizer - Progress is made by removing the superfluous. Someone who can identify and remove complexity and can communicate something in the simplest way is a huge value to an organisation.

Eliminate weakness - Steve Jobs once said “Innovation is saying no to 1000 things”. He saw there was more value in doing fewer things better than doing everything. In fact, Apple used to sell every office computer product you could think of but when Steve became CEO he reduced it to just 4 (iMac, Powermac, iBook & Powerbook).

Be the customer - What separated Apple from its competitors is they understood the dark side of giving too much choice to the consumer. While companies like Dell and HP had up to 41 different computer models to choose from, Apple wanted to make the buying process as easy as possible for users to avoid analysis paralysis. Steve wanted to put computers into the homes of the ‘everyday user’ and he knew that too many features would make them harder to use, deterring a lot of everyday customers. He put himself into the shoes of his users to figure out what they wanted and needed.
