Mastering the 60-Second Challenge

What could you share in sixty seconds?

When it comes to speaking, most people underestimate what they can do with a minute and overestimate what they can do in an hour.

I recently ran a post asking the following (see image). Must say that I was surprised by the silence in LinkedIn versus the rapid responses on Facebook.

Any pitch, conversation or counterpoint begins with a 60-second summary. Here are my tips to speak successfully for that time to get your listener’s attention so that they give you the rest of their time to hold their focus!

Six Steps in Mastering the 60-Second Challenge:

• HEADLINE:?your message in a nutshell (10 words or less). It’s got to be punchy and memorable!
• Have Three Points:?build your message around three key points that flow, from one to the other, as you talk about them.
• Point no. 1:?What’s a killer point? Something that your audience is familiar with – just not from that angle! “Things that make you go Hmmm!!”
• Point no. 2:?Think how you can frame something they find annoying/frustrating and poke the bear. Again, something to get your audience thinking.
• Point no. 3:?How can you show them a resolution? Having poked the bear, you don’t want to leave an angry Grizzly! You want to soothe! What’s the honey you can bring to this situation, that you are uniquely placed to provide.
• Next Step:?What do they need to do with what you’ve just shared?

Remember you only have 60 secs so every word counts – each point has to earn its place in your pitch. If it doesn’t add anything, ditch it!!
