“Master of your own Destiny”

Preliminary

I have gone through my career as a staffing & recruitment consultant by the mantra “master of your own destiny” and lived by design instead of by default. I have followed the path from consultant of a local dutch staffing agency in a small city to ceo of a public listed international staffing & recruitment group.

Most people treat "life" as something that happens to them. When things go wrong, it's someone else's fault. When they don't get promoted, it's because of the environment. When a project goes haywire, when their team falls short, when the service doesn't quite come to fruition, they are never the one to blame. 

These people react to life, and let outside circumstances decide their fate.

They live by Default.

And then there are those that walk into any situation and grab it by the horns. They determine the outcome of their day. They wake up with intention and a plan, they are clear on their goals, they know what needs to get done. They know that success is a process and are willing to go through that process, knowing small actions will mount up to something bigger. 

These people create the life they want to live, and don't accept anything less.

They live by Design. They are masters of their own destiny (by-the-way … I liked the quotes you are using in the book)

I very much recognised this philosophy when reading your book Top Biller and it confirmed to me that working by design rather than by default, as we both did, makes the difference between an average recruitment consultant and a Top Biller.

Book review

“a trip down memory lane”

Having been a top biller myself back in the days I was running a desk in The Netherlands, reading the book Top Biller brings back memories on the way I used to do my job as a recruitment consultant. Steve is sharing his journey with us. The book really shows that Steve takes his job serious. Most of us go to school dreaming about becoming a pilot or a doctor, not about becoming a recruitment consultant. All who have ended up in the staffing and recruitment industry have done this by opportunity. Most leave after a few years to do other things in life, few stay and make a professional career out of it. Steve is somebody who certainly belongs to the small group of ‘lifers’. Lifetime learning and finetuning to end up standing out in the crowd. He takes his job serious and demonstrates one needs to go the extra mile to become successful. The book is a must read for anybody who wants to be successful in the staffing & recruitment industry. It offers insights on how to build a successful desk. The book has a clear structure, is useful as a reference guide and reads easy. I was happy to learn from the book that to be successful nowadays in this era of internet, social media and artificial intelligence, the fundamental values that have helped me to build my career are still very much the basis for success. HR technology is undeniably crucial in this day and age, however, without the fundamentals Steve talks about in his book you will not be able to become a Top Biller.
