If you run those numbers its like years...almost two decades.

One one hand its empowering right? To know exactly what it takes?

But on the other hand its overwhelming.

There is some good news. This data is wrong.

The data was by Anders Ericcson was mis-interpreted by Malcom Gladwell (author of outliers).

Anders Ericcson research found its NOT THE AMOUNT OF TIME that you practice, but HOW you practice.

Here Are 6 Steps to help you master something.

1. Purposeful Practice is when you actually pick a target. Something you actually want to improve and then you pick a training program to help you.

2. Be honest with where you are.

When I decided to learn how to automate my first business I had no skill in this area. Of any kind. This felt very academic. Something I didn't excel in as a kid.

I was quickly very stressed and quickly my brain was confused and I lost hold of the information I did know.

You see stress makes us less functional. Literally our brains shut down the learning "switch".

After some colorful behavior. I took a deep breath, accepted where I was and set into the learning process.

Suddenly I was practicing a new skill I never thought I could.

3. Deliberate Practice.

Behavioral shifts occur when we break larger tasks down into their smaller components and practice them one step at a time, with some good teaching, self-awareness, and coaching.

Now, in my own experience, a skill’s learning curve tends to be in your favor.

  1. Practice in the morning. More energy and focus allows you to learn better.
  2. Don't practice for very long. Focus actually requires certain chemicals in the body and brain and they are quickly depleted. Check out research on neuro-transmitters. Fascinating.
  3. Your goal should be quality not quantity.

4. Get a coach, trainer or mentor.

These are experts and expertise allows someone to see a practice from different angles. The quickest way to find out what's happening in your deliberate practices is to have an expert guiding you.

My clients can send me 4 different numbers or data they have discovered and I can tell them where the holes are.

5. GO, GO, GO.

Intellectual agreement outside of bodily participation is consumption. It's not practice.

Are you busy creating but not busy practicing?

Creation is important. However, practice is when mastery begins to take form.

Do not worry about having it all right. Just get started.

6. Teach someone.

Study is taking in passive knowledge and begins with understanding something simply as theory.

When you have to share what you know then you have to be able to grasp what you are doing.

WHERE TO START MASTERING A SKILL TODAY:

What skill or behavior do you want to start today? TODAY!

Take a minute and define it and make sure you know, clearly, the next step to take.

Don't begin with something that requires a great deal of research.

This is how I help my clients execute on client acquisition systems and stop doing a lot of things.

Once they have masterd the first step I challenge them with something else that will sharpen their skills.

Then one day (usually 30-45 days) they can read the data, they can hear the feedback and know exactly what needs to happen.
