This seven module course is designed to provide instruction on implementing hand thinning and pruning maintenance techniques to improve the health and look of ornamental shrubs in the boxwood group. LA CES Approved

Participants in this course will learn to understand the cultural significance and history of boxwood, become familiar with the artistic value and principles of boxwood design use and sculpting in the landscape , be able to evaluate the horticultural requirements for boxwood in a range of conditions and climates, apply best planting, pruning, and hand thinning practices to the care of boxwood with special attention to the assessment of mature and new boxwood plantings, and develop the awareness of bio-security practices that are necessary for the ecological use of boxwood. Elements of this lesson may be applied to other woody shrubs used for similar hedging and parterre and topiary purposes.

The asynchronous course is a series of PowerPoint lectures recorded into video format. Each module includes additional recommended readings in the form of downloadable articles or linked material, a short quiz, and a reflection activity to assist participants in applying the lecture. The course modules cover a brief history of boxwood, tool selection and care, plant selection, pruning techniques and design uses of boxwood in the landscape.

LA CES Approved - Complete the course assessment for grading. King Garden will submit your participation for credits.

Learning Objectives for the course are:

  • To understand the cultural significance and history of boxwood
  • To become familiar with the artistic value and principles of the use of boxwood in design in the landscape
  • To be able to evaluate the horticultural requirements for boxwood cultivars in a range of conditions and climates
  • To apply best planting, pruning, and hand thinning practices to the care of boxwood
  • To develop the awareness of bio-security practices that necessary for the ecological use of boxwood in the landscape
