Master Creativity Through Strategic Reading: A Guide to Learning New Skills with Books

Hello, dear readers,

Welcome back to another edition of Musings of a Book Queen, where you’ll get a quick lesson on how to read books to learn a skill.

Mark Cuban once said that creativity is the only skill you need. I wouldn't go that far, however, it's a very important skill to have. It's often listed in the skills you need to thrive in the future.

If you'd like to hone your creativity skills, choose five or more good books to read to build a strong foundation for creativity. You won't develop expertise in creativity because that will take years to do.

You could read books like The MacGyver Secret by Lee David Zlotoff and Colleen Seifert, How to Get Ideas by Jack Foster and Larry Corby, Find Your Red Thread by Tamsen Webster, Big Little Breakthroughs by Josh Linkner, and Creativity Rules by Tina Seelig.?

Many of these books will be unfamiliar to you and a good habit to adopt is to make sure some books you read are off the beaten path.

You'd read your five books in relation to each other using the strategic reading process. That means reading the books to learn what you need to know. Take notes and look at how the books are similar and dissimilar. Have you found any information that’s surprising or contrarian? Do the books leave gaps in your knowledge? Do you notice any patterns emerging?

To make the new knowledge stick, teach what you learned to another person. And apply the information to a project you're working on.
