The Story Of YOU & Your Personal Brand
Storytelling — once the stuff of childhood nighttime rituals — has grown up and is quickly becoming a go-to tool in the very adult world of business.
MBA programs, workshops, and coaches all offer strategies and support to help today’s business leaders and owners craft a better story. And it makes sense.
Those who understand this dynamic can elevate the quality of their businesses — and their results — by leveraging the natural human propensity to make sense of the world around us through stories.
These business storytellers create a narrative that contributes to greater connection, engagement and shared meaning.
Stories Are Vivid And Memorable
Everyone loves a story from young to old. They connect with people at an emotional level for higher engagement.
All great teachers and mentors use stories to connect at deeper level and provide a clear picture of their teaching. When it comes to business, stories attract prospects by creating curiosity and solutions to their challenges.
Realistically, although every one and every business has a story to tell, not everyone is a good storyteller.?
A good storyteller can present a relatively weak story engagingly and believable.?
On the other hand, a poor storyteller can render a fascinating story boring and unappealing.
Storytelling gives us a way of inspiring listeners in a way that appeals to both sides of our character.
Stories are how we think. They are how we make meaning of life. …
Stories are how we explain how things work, how we make decisions, how we justify our decisions, how we persuade others, how we understand our place in the world, create our identities, and define and teach social values.
Why do audiences respond so well to stories?

The answer, according to brain science, is that our brains need information to be packaged as stories. Lists of facts are difficult to understand and remember because they aren’t in a story format.
Storytelling is a natural and obvious element of marketing your services.
Personalized Marketing Is Real
Effectively serving and satisfying our clients depends to a large degree on maintaining workable interpersonal relationships with them.
It is our individual personalities that help increase our likeability in the minds of potential clients.
By telling your story, not the stories of some else, you can showcase your personality.?
We have an intuitive, emotional side as well as a deliberate, rational side.
Too often in business we only try and connect with people on a rational level but this isn’t enough to actually change how people behave.
People may understand what you want them to do, but if they aren’t emotionally engaged, they just won’t do it!
A good story offers detail that potentially ideal clients and referral sources can use to make their own judgments, ideally forging authentic, emotional connection with you.
Your Creation Myth
Marketing guru Jay Abraham suggests that your story take the form of your creation myth.
That's the story of you and your personal brand. Here are some questions to get you started on developing your creation myth.
What is your story?
Where did you start?
What does it mean to your business?
What failures have you experienced that led you to your success in business?
To get started on your story, simply answer the above questions, in about 500 words for each.
Once you are satisfied with your answers, edit your story be keeping the important elements, cutting the length by about 50%.
When it comes to telling your creation myth, short is better than long.?
For present purposes, the ideal length for your story is about 800 words or less .
Once you have shortened your story to its ideal length … use it when and where appropriate.
And feel free to revise and update your story whenever it feels like the right thing to do.
