? Massless Hands
After a lifetime of creating with computers I was frustrated by the constraints. I wanted to break free from sedentary 2D and work spatially and dynamically. To make this a reality we need stable, reliable, and precise hand tracking.
Camera only based hand tracking will always suffer from occlusion (like where one hand blocks the other). No matter how good your computer vision or machine learning model is - it can’t see through stuff. For reliable precision tracking attached motion sensors are required.
It was important for me for the fingertip pads to be free so you could still interact with a keyboard, mouse, or stylus easily. I was also anti-glove. Gloves are fine for motion capture, but I wanted something more elegant for prosumer HCI - wireless fingertip rings
I wanted the experience of putting the rings on and off to feel great and be quick and easy. Being wireless they will also need a charging dock and base station for Bluetooth communication. Magnetic contacts would aid with removal and charging.
We made functional prototypes, many 3D printed designs, PCB/PCBA designs and worked with some super talented electronic engineers and designers, but ultimately felt the prosumer market for precision fingertip tracking was not ready yet.
