Massachusetts medical device company based out of Israel expands to Hudson, New Hampshire

Alpha Tau Medical , currently located in Lawrence, Massachusetts, has expanded their US presence, leasing 14,460 square feet of manufacturing space at 24 Constitution Drive in Hudson, New Hampshire where they will hire up to 10 employees in the next two years.

Why Alpha Tau moved to New Hampshire

Alpha Tau chose to manufacture their medical products in New Hampshire to reduce their occupancy costs, attract a larger talent pool in both NH and MA, and still be close enough to retain current MA employees living in the Boston metro region.

Alpha Tau's product

Alpha Tau is working on the commercialization of a new treatment for solid cancer tumors. The technology was developed in 2003 in Tel Aviv University.

Why their product is different

The company uses alpha radioactive atoms in a precise, safe way resulting in minimal tissue damage.

Using what they call Alpha DaRT??technology they insert tiny metal "seeds" infused with radioactive radium-224 in the tumor. The radio active atoms on the seeds disperse and decay quickly but long enough to kill cancer cells after which the seeds are taken out. So far the trails have shown great success.

Growing medical device companies from MA are expanding to NH

There is a growing number of medical device companies in Massachusetts transitioning from R&D to production in New Hampshire. They usually keep their current researchers and executives living in Cambridge north to Burlington/North Andover regions and in New Hampshire hire new managers and a production team.

Massachusetts' recent increases in taxes and regulations are also impacting family owned medical device companies. They like New Hampshire because:

  • Lower taxes and more affordable housing compared to MA (but the housing market is tight in NH)
  • Lower industrial rental rates
  • Draw from a talent pool in NH and MA
  • NH is part of a strong medical device employment region

Workforce availability in NH is strong compared to the nation in medical technicians and sales.
