The Masking of Serious Issues part 1 of 3: hide depression behind success
Disclaimer:
I am not a medical expert and have no formal technical expertise on the topics of suicide or mental health.?
?The realm of depression
The first time I truly delved into the realm of depression and its underlying causes was during my early teenage years when a classmate attempted suicide. It was a shock that opened my eyes to the profound impact of depression. Sadly, this wasn't the last time I would encounter such a tragic scenario. Over the years, I witnessed more instances of suicide, including that of a dear friend – someone who seemed to have it all: kindness, community involvement, a loving family, and an optimistic outlook on life. His suicide left all of us bewildered, wondering where we had failed him. It was clear that stigma had played a role in his suffering, and in hindsight, we could see the signs more clearly.
?
As the years passed, I mourned the loss of more loved ones to suicide. Some of whom friends and families in certain times never would have thought that this specific person could one day be so depressed and not see a future. A successful teacher, as a student the clown, and as a grown up an advisor to many.
Mental health
While this serie of articles isn't specifically about suicide, it is about the broader context of mental health, which encompasses much more than the act itself. It's alarming to note that Suriname, the place I call home, ranks in the top 10 worldwide for perceived mental health challenges. It is encouraging that nowadays much more people, subject matter experts and organizations are committed to support in this field. However in our daily lives you and I need to be more aware of our surroundings. Our loved ones, our relationships with coworkers, our neighborhood and the impact we can have.
?

1 年Yes, Dare to aks for help. I would say, seek help not from friends and family, because the place you go to when depressed is a very dark and lonely place. They likely will try to fix you, which is not what you need at that moment. But do seek professional help.
