Masking Authenticity

Masking Authenticity

When we are young, we are told to be kind, open, loving and generous.? When we stood up to the bullies for treating someone badly, we got shoved in a locker.? Our mindset began to change.? Being open, kind and generous can sometimes come at a price.? So, we put on masks to protect ourselves as we tried to fit in with others.? The athletic mask.? The success mask.? The intellectual mask.? The joker mask.? The know it all mask and so on.

Our masks helped us to achieve a level of “success” but they also cause us to struggle.? We often hide our vulnerability, our true self, beneath our masks.? It is what we lost when we were shoved in the locker, humiliated and afraid.? We need to return to what was once lost while being careful not to put on a new mask in the process.? The agency and leadership this requires often inspires others to follow our example.

?

Are the masks you wear bringing you closer to others or moving you further away?? Are they earning or burning trust in those relationships?? Masks can protect us temporarily but their usage comes at a cost.? Are your masks empowering you or creating more drama and chaos?? Learning to become less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome can help us to recognize and remove our masks.

So true Phil Johnson, MBL. It is therefore critical for people to 'PROCESS' the events that cause us to put on the mask eg we need to PROCESS being pushed into the locker. We have been using our Root Cause Coaching process with tremendous success in helping leaders to identify and process the events (Original Sensitising Event) that shape current behaviours that may not be in alignment with great leadership.
