Mask-less in America

Mask-less in America

If you find yourself confused with the new rules of the day, what is a respectable way to live and what is not, please know that you are not alone.

As a young man in my first business, I asked my father why people would call and ask for a job and then never even show up for the interview.

He told me something that has stuck with me forever.

He said, “Danny, most people will let you down. You can count on it.”

It wasn’t said in anger or even frustration. The comment was simply a fact as he saw it.

Throughout life, your positions on the topics of the day will change. Your perspective will change, and your cynicism will grow. People WILL let you down.

You will wonder why smart, educated, and wise friends and family simply follow another human without critical thought if that person has enough fancy degrees, political titles, or celebrity for whatever reason.

Then they will pressure you to join the herd and be a follower too. Even if the new fad is directly opposite to what they have always believed.

Here are just a few:

·      Then: A mask is to prevent you from ingesting dust and bacteria.

Now: A mask is to prevent you from spreading your germs to others. All of a sudden, everyone is Typhoid Mary!

·      Then: Do not use antibacterial stuff because you won’t develop the antibodies needed to ward of the “super virus” that will come.

Now: Use antibacterial stuff always and forever or you will die in two weeks.

·      Then: If a kid in the neighborhood gets the chicken pox, go over and contract it so you will develop an immunity for the future.

Now: Stay away from people at all costs; be afraid, be afraid, be afraid!

·      Then: Go out and get a trade so you have some skills to fall back on when times get tough.

Now: Go into debt and get an education to learn how to collect from the government when times get tough.

Here’s the tip: Like I told my children, you can only truly trust one person in your life who you can follow. Yourself (and maybe your parents). Gather all the information from everywhere, then decide what makes sense for you. You know more about you, and what is right for you, than anyone else. Be a leader of SELF first!

Best Wishes,

The Deej

P.S. Please leave a comment, especially if you disagree! I need to understand people better.

Thank you for the wonderful post. The advice is greatly appreciated.

If people disappoint you maybe it’s because you didn’t take time to understand them in the first place. There are reasons for everything.

Dan! Totally agree. Drastically conflicting info and often political motive that does not care about truth.

Dan Jourdan you know I enjoy the advice you pull from the 'Dad Advice Archives.' I totally agree: people will definitely let you down. It takes some getting used to and some practice not to get angry/upset. These disappointments can be some of the worst. I also agree with your last paragraph about trusting my guidance or my parents.
