Mashies and Mash Tuns

Dear Everyone

I have just finished reading “Mashies and Mash Tuns” by a relatively new author Andrew Brown. And an extremely informative and entertaining read it is. This is Brown’s 2nd book and his theme is one very close to my heart – and to the heart of many of our clients. You see the subject matter is all about golf and whisky – 2 loves of my life – and no doubt of thousands of golfers around the world. Having worked in the whisky industry before we bought Morton Golf Holidays I am of course a little biased. However I know from talking to thousands of clients over the years they come to Scotland not only to play our world class golf courses but also to enjoy a whisky experience along the way. Mashies and Mash Tuns is Brown’s 2nd book – his first being Of Peats and Putts – both of these offerings I can highly recommend as they take the reader on a wonderful journey playing hidden gem golf courses and visiting nearby whisky distilleries. The general theme in both books is to play golf in an area which is located close to a whisky distillery – for example play at Brora in the morning and visit the Clynelish Distillery in the afternoon – and this plan can be repeated throughout the country – play Machrihanish then visit Springbank Distillery and so on. In fact Brown’s book could be describing a Morton Golf tour! Of Peats and Putts covers 9 golf courses in different locations all over Scotland the courses being selected as they are close to a neighbouring distillery. Warming to his theme Mashies and Mash Tuns uses the identical plan but this time the golf courses and whisky distilleries are in England (yes they now are producing whisky – although they can’t call it Scotch!). He also journeys to Wales and then onto Ireland – where incidentally whisky adds an “e” so the Irish version is whiskey! And more than just describing his clearly enjoyable encounters with all of these great courses and distilleries Brown draws comparison with both golf and whisky to life itself – and who can disagree with him.
