MASH Road Barrier Products

MASH Road Barrier Products

MASH Compliance for Barrier came into effect July 2019. NZTA 23 has now been updated to depict this change and highlight legacy products no longer in use. MASH performance criteria ensures road barriers have been developed to manage today's vehicle fleet which has increased in mass and centre of gravity for commuter vehicles on our roads. MASH also addresses known vulnerabilities in preceding standards ensuring that new barrier systems cover a more varied number of run off impacts. Terminations to barrier systems is the impact area that deems the most risk to motorists. Some past solutions on our roading network have raised questions of if the vehicle can be safely contained or safely redirected. As always we try and learn from the past to better the future, we have an aging network as does the world, there will always be legacy items/products or designs out there, it just is! Hence why we have times of raised standards and improved products.

Moving forward, barrier product in NZ is now predominantly Proprietary Products, a knowledge of what can/cannot be installed and what is safe is a must for design and installation solutions. Responsibility now lays with designers, supplier/manufactures, contractors and agencies in delivering a safe and correct outcome for the public. As we all care about safer road journey's and getting home safely everyday, conversations involving all parties need to be had in order to achieving the best solution for zero harm. A shared community of knowledge will get us to the future.
