Maryland LCV Commends Governor Moore’s Budget Prioritization of Environmental Programs

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Maryland League of Conservation Voters (Maryland LCV) today praised Governor Wes Moore’s FY2026 budget proposal for its continued commitment to environmental protection, climate action, and Chesapeake Bay restoration. While acknowledging some cuts to environmental funding, the proposed budget maintains critical environmental programs while maintaining Maryland’s position as a clean energy leader.

The proposed budget demonstrates significant investments in Maryland’s environmental future, anchored by a $180 million commitment to alternative energy, which includes $50 million for state government properties, $80 million for local government clean energy projects such as solar and geothermal installations, and $50 million for solar on schools and net-zero school constructions. The budget also maintains essential funding for environmental enforcement and workforce development in the clean energy sector.

“Governor Moore’s budget reflects a clear understanding that environmental protection and economic growth go hand in hand,” said Kim Coble, Executive Director of Maryland LCV. “While we have concerns about the one-time transfer of $150 million from the Strategic Energy Investment Fund, we appreciate that funding for core environmental programs remain intact. We look forward to working with the General Assembly to ensure stable, long-term funding for climate initiatives and Bay restoration that are critical to Maryland’s economic future and the health of our communities.”

The administration’s commitment to the Chesapeake Bay remains strong, with ongoing funding for water quality programs and increased support for Coastal and Atlantic Bay Programs. These investments, coupled with preserved Program Open Space funding, demonstrate a comprehensive approach to environmental protection that balances immediate needs with long-term sustainability goals. “We are also encouraged to see the administration’s continued commitment to environmental justice through preserved funding for programs that benefit our most vulnerable communities,” said Kim Coble. “These investments will help ensure that Maryland’s transition to a clean energy economy leaves no person or community behind.”

Maryland LCV will continue working with legislators throughout the budget process to protect environmental funding and advance the state’s climate goals.
