On Saturday, September 14th at 1:00 p.m. we partnered with the Banneker-Douglass Museum for a lecture with Dr. Michael R. Fischbach who is the author of Black Power and Palestine: Transnational Countries of Color. Following the lecture, a thoughtful panel discussion moderated by Thomas James, Guest Curator of REVISIT/REIMAGINE consisted of Fischbach and Susan Muaddi Darraj, author of Behind You is the Sea.
Thank you to Executive Director, Chanel Johnson , of the Banneker-Douglass Museum for the opportunity to partner on this phenomenal community event and lecture. Kudos to their entire staff, particular their Director of Programs, Sabriyah Hassan, M.Ed . With Chanel serving on the Maryland Humanities Board of Directors, we look forward to more partnerships with the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum in the future.
On Friday and Saturday, September 13 & 14, Maryland Humanities was thrilled to support a two-day festival in recognition of 2024 as “Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights” as proclaimed by Governor Wes Moore. This event marked both the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, as well as the commemoration of the annual Harriet Tubman Emancipation Day and International Underground Railroad Month.
Using a wide array of activities, the event allowed participants to explore the history and legacy of the abolition of slavery and the civil rights movements, providing a racial equity lens for viewing Maryland’s past. We celebrate the courage and determination of those who paved the way for justice.
