Good morning Baltimore and happy Wednesday.
If you made it out to celebrate the 2023 class of BBJ's 40 Under 40 honorees, thanks for joining. For those who were busy, we had an incredible event at the Marriott Owings Mills Metro Centre.
Our honorees chose walk-up songs to receive their awards and we heard everyone from Coltrane to Cardi B.
There was even a 360-degree photo booth which BBJ staff (and others, yes) took a few turns with.
That's a wrap on BBJ's 2023 events, but take a look at our lineup of open nominations and events for next year — we hope to see you soon.
Now for the news.
Brunch chain announces new College Park location
The breakfast-all-day brand Iron Rooster has announced a new dining spot for Terrapins. The chain will open a restaurant in The Hotel at University of Maryland, which opened in 2017. The restaurant plans to open before the year is out, according to a press release, and its location will put it just across the street from the UMD campus’s main entrance. It’ll be the chain’s fourth location alongside stores in Annapolis, Hunt Valley and the Canton neighborhood of Baltimore, plus one in Locust Point, which has been closed for months now. As a frequent patron of the College Park Denny’s not too many years ago, I can say from experience that Terps love a good all-day breakfast option.

Maryland named home market for professional lacrosse team
Though there's no telling what city or stadium it will be played in, professional lacrosse is coming back to Maryland. The state was named one of eight home markets for the Premier Lacrosse League's 2024 season, and the Maryland Whipsnakes will play two games on the weekend they are at home (wherever city that may be). The league will continue its touring schedule, with each home market getting a game weekend, and two weekends will be played at neutral venues. The Whipsnakes are in the East conference with New York, Boston and Philadelphia. The West home markets are Utah, Carolina, Denver and California, per PLL's announcement.
Ravens linebacker to launch nonprofit this week
Though Tyus Bowser has not touched the field for the Ravens this season, the linebacker has kept busy. Bowser is launching his foundation for disadvantaged city youth, appropriately named the Tyus Bowser Foundation, according to a press release. The organization will partner with the Boys & Girls Club, Baltimore City Public Schools and the YMCA for three programs: 1) STEM Station to renovate unused school spaces for math and science; 2) Teachers Scramble to shop with teachers to help them purchase supplies, and; 3) Draft Day to mentor high school students about the professional world. After the launch, the foundation’s first event will be in Q1 2024 after the Ravens’ season is over.
Towson man wins final Migratory Game Bird Stamp contest
Jim Taylor of Towson has won the 50th and final Migratory Game Bird Stamp contest for his depiction of American ducks flying over a marsh, the Department of Natural Resources announced yesterday. The design, “May They Always Fly,” is Taylor’s sixth winning submission. The contest is being eliminated because receipts are replacing physical stamps as proof of permission for hunting migratory game birds in the state. Taylor is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art. DNR will print a series of commemorative 50th anniversary decals with his work displayed. Check out the design:
