Marketing Your Book, Part 1: Mindset

In this multi-week series, I'm going to help you understand and engage in effective book marketing—which is quite different in many ways from product marketing, marketing services, or even social media marketing.
Once you have a book, or even before you do, there are many things you can do to capitalize on the benefits of being an author (and by capitalize, I do mean: make money). Not the least of which is to have a marketing mindset, and a positive one at that.
I would love to abolish the belief that money isn't made from book sales, in fact, I can attest that many people make money as a result of selling their book directly—by signing and selling books in concert with a speaking engagement, as well as through online ebook royalties, bulk sales, and in many more ways. I'm getting ahead of myself. Stay tuned, at some point I hope to get you inspired and your creative juices flowing (will you let me know when I do?).
Marketing your book starts with a?successful book marketing mindset. I'm not going to say anything else about mindset, but if you want to make sure yours is in order, grab a copy of my book?Prosperity for Writers.?(I also address this in the first chapter of?You Must Market Your Book). Because before you can see it, you've got to believe it!
For the purposes of our conversation in this series—and I do hope it's a conversation (so please leave a comment or send me an email with your answer)—I want you to pull out a sticky note (or my favorite, a?Slicky Note, which might just change your life).
On the sticky note, write the amount of income you want to earn from your book sales and royalties (and I promise I'll write about marketing?with?your book as part of this series, and that'll be an additional amount).
I set a goal to earn $100,000 in book sales from my first book,?Tall Order!?back in 2005. I sold 11,000 copies (which I talk about in this podcast) and earned over $100,000?in the first three weeks. Why? Because I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be able to do that!

What you won't hear from me is how many books the average author sells, or that something (anything!) is impossible. I know you can do it because I did it—and because I'm going to help you do it, too!
