The Marketing Well- Chapter 2

In last month's article, we discussed how the Samaritan woman initially refused Jesus's request based on her perception of him. In response, Jesus shifted the conversation by appealing to the woman's curiosity.

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

Jesus responded to her skepticism by intriguing her with two things: the gift of God, which is eternal life offered freely, and the giver of the gift, Jesus Christ himself. This showed the woman that it wasn't Jesus who was in need; rather, she was the one in need. And whatever she needed, Jesus could provide something far better.

Let’s take this into marketing and see what we can learn.?

In marketing, success hinges on the fundamental principle of exchange of value. It's a simple yet profound concept: before customers commit to your product or service, they want to know the value you offer them in return. This principle is beautifully illustrated in this encounter between Jesus and the woman at the well.

It’s therefore essential to clearly communicate the benefits and value that your offering provides to your target audience. This is simply known as “value proposition"

What Is a Value Proposition?

A value proposition (or value prop) is a clear, compelling statement that explains how your product or service benefits potential customers or a specific market segment.?

It answers the customer question: “What value can I get from your product or service that I can’t get from your competitors?"?

Just as Jesus emphasizes the "gift of God" and who the giver of the giver is, marketers must articulate the unique benefits and advantages of their product or service to potential customers as well the brand offering it. By this, we are talking about the value of the product brand and the corporate/personal brand.?

It is of high significance to know your audience and tailor your message to resonate with their needs and desires. Every customer needs satisfaction.? By understanding the Samaritan woman's situation and offering her something of great value, Jesus effectively captures her attention and engages her in a meaningful conversation. This means that, as business owners or marketers, we must understand the needs of potential customers and offer something that is so valuable to them.?

We must empathize with their target audience, identify their pain points, and present solutions that address their specific needs. By aligning the value proposition with the customer's interests and needs, we can create compelling messages that inspire action and drive conversions.

Overall, John 4:10 teaches us the importance of clearly communicating the value proposition, understanding the customer's perspective, and offering solutions that meet their needs – essential principles for successful marketing in any context.

If you are running a business or involved in any form of marketing, create value for your customers and communicate the value clearly to them. Like Jesus said, “If you knew,.., you would have asked him and he would have given you”

If your customers know the value you offer, they will ask for your product or service.

Thank you for reading. See you next month.

Dr. Myles Munroe said that every piece of writing that has made a significant impact on society has its concepts taken from the Bible without any acknowledgment or referencing. Through your newsletter, you have shown me that the statement Dr. Munroe made is true. Juxtaposing scriptures on marketing with the various principles of marketing not only brings insights from the Bible to the understanding of the ordinary person, but you also encourage us to have a different disposition on how the Bible speaks to our day jobs. As a doctor, I am encouraged not only to pick insights from my Bible moments for just my spiritual experience and needs but to look at it from a perspective where my interaction with my patients and their parents can be optimized for greater impact. Thank you for putting this piece together. Truly the Apostle of Marketing…
