Marketing: Strategy and Details Matter
As I labor over a paragraph to describe a new product, something I've done countless times in my career, I am thinking to myself, how important is this to the value of the company? What matters most when you are working to build value in a company? The strategy or the details? I'd be the first to say, that the big things matter most. Strategy matters. The mission. Market / Product fit. Product / Channel strategy. Pricing. Clear and compelling buyer messaging. Yeah, pretty much you have to be vigilant about analyzing and tuning the big things, or your big idea becomes yesterday's news.
But, the details matter too. The structure and words of one sentence can draw an audience in or compel them to dismiss your company forever. The visual feeling of one picture has the power to create engagement or fade into oblivion. The timing and relevancy of one customer communication can create loyalty or disdain. The way you treat every person inside and outside your organization matters to the reputation of your business.
I wish I could say "take care of the small things and the big things will take care of themselves" ... or the opposite. Because that would be much easier! But, valuable things -- think high-end cars, homes or fashions-- are both well-designed and also crafted to perfection. The business value created by marketing is the same.
Thanks for reading. Now, I have to go back to editing that paragraph....

7 年Agree -- language is an integral part of strategy because it sets the frame and context. The wrong language can undo -- or strongly impair -- the right strategy.
