Marketing with the Scientific Method

Marketing with the Scientific Method

Without realizing it, many years of my education being focused on science I gained a long-term advantage. Across all disciplines of science, there is a consistently logical structure to understand and follow. Learning with the same basic process so many times, allowed me to internalize the systematic approach to being solution-oriented.

With more than 5 years in the marketing industry I have seen the tangible benefits for adopting the scientific method in my everyday marketing strategy. This has allowed me to learn how to approach novel concepts and find applicable solutions. It doesn’t mean every idea or approach works, but every attempt provides more detail to find a better solution in the future.

So, let’s first agree on the meaning or structure on this method.

The Scientific Method – The procedure (process) that has been used in natural since the 17th century consisting of the following basic steps. It can never prove something 100% true all the time…It only proves you’re not wrong right now!

In order to make this actually helpful and valuable, I want to provide an example of this in the marketing or business arena.

Gary Vaynerchuk has perfected this process, even if he calls it something different, over the 20+ years doing what he does best.

·        He observes a trend, problem or opportunity – 2012 Facebook buys Instagram for $1 billion and Gary calls it ‘a steal’

·        He then tests his hypothesis (educated guess) to see how the market responds

·        He then collects the data (conversion metrics)

·        He analyzes the data to figure if his guess was right or not – 2014 WhatsApp sells for $19 billion to Facebook

·        If he was wrong, he makes a new educated guess – using the data he just gathered.

This is the type of process that we all should follow. We can’t all expect to be as good at the start as someone like Gary…with decades of expertise. We can all get better at it over time.

How do we get better at this?

·        Just act! Use this or your systematic approach and keep trying.

·        This is a circle for a reason…the process should never stop for anyone in life or business.

·        It doesn’t matter if we think our idea is the greatest of all time…the market will tell us the real value. The audience keeps us honest. So put your message out there to the public.

If you are interested in discussing this further or any business strategy across the B2B industry, reach out anytime. I would be interested to discuss how you can use this to grow your business now.
