EQUESTRIAN SPORTS ?? The world of sports law covers a wide range of disciplines, including equestrian sports, which require robust legal frameworks for integrity and animal welfare. It’s inspiring to see the growth in this area, particularly with the recent advancements by the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) to strengthen sanctions and introduce new measures against abuse. This sector’s legal regulation is evolving rapidly, and I’m proud to collaborate with colleagues like Olivia Mulvany from our UK partner firm, who has been deeply engaged in equestrian sports law. It is great to see the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) increasing the available sanctions for horse abuse. I guess now we need to wait to see whether this is enough to protect our social licence to operate and, more importantly, our precious horses. Increasing sanctions is one thing but first we need to more efficiently and effectively identify the perpetrators. I expect that is why the FEI is also introducing scope for out-of-competition doping tests and it will be interesting to see how that scheme operates, and whether it increases the likelihood of catching abuse before these riders spend many fruitful years at the top level. #equestrian #equestrianlife #equestriansport #sportslaw #toplevel #competition #settingexamples #animalwelfare https://lnkd.in/ej3vTiJV

USA: The Safest Country in the World If you're a horse, that is.? The United States Equestrian Federation has just made a groundbreaking move by expanding its jurisdiction to address horse abuse beyond competition grounds. This change in their rules allows them to act in cases of horse abuse regardless of where it occurred. A surprising move for a country that has always had a strong sense of privacy. This level of jurisdiction is not entirely new, as the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) has a similar rule in place for its members, which would apply to only 2,230 riders out of the 180,000 members stated on the USEF's website. This initiative couldn't come at a better time. With increasing external pressure on equestrian sports to uphold higher welfare standards, USEF's decision demonstrates decisive action and leadership. While it’s true that not all national federations can follow this example due to differences in national laws that might hinder the enforcement of similar rules, this move is an active step in a sport that, according to public opinion, was passive for way too long.
