Marketing Junto | Being Humble Is An Art Form

Marketing Junto | Being Humble Is An Art Form

My Take

I’ve interviewed lots of people both as a journalist and as a podcaster. I’ve noticed something… being humble is an art form.

Some of the biggest names I’ve had on the Entrepreneur’s Enigma and Digital Marketing Dive podcasts have every right to be boastful and arrogant, but I’m always amazed by how humble and down to earth they are. Then there are the few that think they are God’s gift to their vertical. Whether it be podcasting, social media, digital marketing, traditional marketing, etc.

The contrast is drastic. I’m not saying that these boastful people are intentionally being full of themselves, I’m not saying they’re bad, what I am saying is that it always surprises me who is and who isn’t.

In marketing there are some big names that could and even should be full of themselves but are in fact very humble and very generous with their time. I can’t say I was surprised?when I interviewed Guy Kawasaki on Entrepreneur’s Enigma?that he was a nice, humble person. But he could very well have been boastful and obnoxious because to be honest — he is a huge deal.

I think what it boils down to is how secure the people are in their own skin. They all can be proud, but sometimes it comes across as arrogant and self-absorbed.

I’d be interested in your thoughts on this. What do you think?

Web Finds

A good thought piece about how WordPress contributors are managing the open-source project. The author, Eric Karkovack, points out that other places in the WordPress CMS have languished while the block editor has gotten most of the attention. It seems like these languished pieces of the project are getting more attention which is good.

Eric Karkovak, writing over at Speckyboy Design Magazine, points out how important community is for freelance web designers. I have to agree with Eric, without a solid community behind you, freelance, of any kind really, can be lonely and daunting.

An interesting piece on how to make SEO accessible and keep the Web in general accessible to deaf and disabled people. There’s a way to still rank high in the search engines and be accessible.

Ranking first on Google for a chosen keyword varies depending on a number of factors. One factor especially is how big the competition is. Check out the rest of the tips Olga gives. It’s a good article.

Lily Ray is one of my favorite SEOs. She’s always giving back to the community and willing to help with her expansive knowledge. This article is adapted from her recent MozCon presentation. Anyone who has followed Lily for any extended period of time will know she’s big on E-A-T and in this piece, she explains why Expertise (the E in E-A-T) is the most important ranking factor.

Local SEO is important for many small businesses. This is a great recap of what was discussed at the recent MozCon in Seattle.

Fresh and updated content is very much underrated when it comes to SEO. The new and refreshed content you put on your site the more Google will come back and index your site and evaluate your rankings.

Matt Mullenweg the founder of Automattic, co-founder of the WordPress project, and Tumblr, thinks Tumblr could be better than Twitter. I think that’s audacious to say the least, but also ambitious. Tumblr has a great community. It will probably be great. But I think it’s comparing apples to oranges when it comes to being better than Twitter. But only time will tell. I’m watching the developments for sure.

I’m not sure how I feel about this? Part of me likes the idea of my videos, when I upload them to the ‘Gram, are turned into the more interactive Reels format, but part of me doesn’t like that we, the users don’t have the option to or not to do that. Thoughts?

About time, but is it too late?
