marketing generalist | 2/∞

Marketing generalists get a lot of flack. The argument is that spreading their attention thin over many distinct skillsets precludes a generalist from going deep in one channel.?

That's not true. What is true is that most generalists start as specialists before extending the horizontal end of their T-shape.?

This is my point of view; marketing generalist is itself a speciality.

To be a generalist is to have a broad-based perspective on solutions. As you have no allegiance to a single marketing medium, you can synthesise ideas across channels, identify throughlines and build intricate but finely-tuned marketing machines.?

To do that is to have a particular type of superpower.

The lousy marketing generalists are the ones who have refused to deep in on any aspects of the marketing spectrum. These will miss essential signals that improve their work.?

Justice for generalists! Then again, I am sure you understand the scepticism towards people who can wear many hats. What can be done is showing at every turn, how adept one is at all these other marketing skillsets.

Nice piece of thought Gbenga. In my opinion, the generalist is best suited for management because (s)he understands the entire length of the spectrum and by experience knows the application best suitable to tackle specific challenges. A swiss army knife of some sort.
