Market landscape and navigating your way to long-term success in tutoring

Whether you are new to tutoring or a seasoned professional, understanding the tutoring landscape can significantly shape your future career path. Trust, reliability, and relatability are driving an increasing dependence on tutoring services among students and parents.

Today, tutors have several options to consider in their tutoring journey. These decisions determine their independence, flexibility, control, and ultimately, their earning potential.

Choose wisely, teach passionately, and adapt boldly, because the future of learning is in your hands.

While the routes may seem confusing at first, they can be broadly categorized into four (4) distinct buckets for clearer understanding, namely:

1.?????? Traditional Academies, Tuition and Coaching Centers

2.?????? Online Tuition Providers

3.?????? Online Marketplaces

4.?????? Independent Practice

Let’s explore the characteristics, pros and cons of each in further detail.

Traditional Academies, Tuition and Coaching Centers

These are typical neighborhood tutoring schools that primarily offer in-person sessions but are increasingly incorporating online and hybrid learning formats due to changes brought on by COVID-19.

At tuition centers, tutors are assigned students based on their qualifications and experience, relieving them of student acquisition and administrative tasks. The income model for tutors offers some predictability in the form of a salary or basic minimum payout topped up with student linked commissions in certain cases. However, this predictability is offset by the limited income potential.

Most centers specialize in certain grades, curriculum and examination levels and tend to offer group classes to maximize their own income potential. Tutors typically attend in person at the venue, deliver online classes, or a combination of both, based on the model of the center.

Online Tutoring Schools and Coaching Providers

Online tutoring schools are the fully online equivalent of traditional tuition centers, typically having a scale advantage serving multiple geographies under a single brand umbrella. Typical examples include the likes of GoStudent in Europe, Cluey in Australia, and Varsity Tutors in the US.

The pros and cons of tutoring with an online center are nearly identical to the ones noted above for a traditional center. While there is one additional benefit of being able to teach from anywhere, the is likely a greater downside of building zero visibility as a tutoring brand, typically worse than in a traditional center due to narrow visibility limited only to students assigned by the online platform.

Online Marketplaces

Online marketplaces are a good place to start if you are a new tutor, a student looking to fill your hours and make some income, or a paraprofessional only partially committed to tutoring. Online marketplaces include the likes of MyTutor, Preply, Chegg or Tutor.com. They help bring eyeballs to your profile and provide their platform to deliver your services should you get student interest and bookings.

In addition to the high commissions charged by the marketplaces, seasoned tutors and long-term professionals, whether tutoring full- or part-time, find themselves at a disadvantage on online marketplaces due to lack of differentiation with less experienced or offshore providers willing to sacrifice pricing for customers.

The dilemma of excessive choice has also burdened marketplaces. To deal with that, marketplaces force reduced choices algorithmically, inevitably limiting exposure for tutors.

Freelancing and marketplaces

Independent Practice

This method is one of the oldest and most widely practiced forms of tutoring, remaining dominant in the in-person sector while rapidly gaining traction online.

Tutoring is a highly trust-based market with 70-80% of students finding tutors through word-of-mouth referrals. Of course, these referrals are also directed towards providers and sometimes to marketplaces but are predominantly skewed to people the referees know of personally.

Independent tutoring is not for everyone. But those who take this route take the single most significant step that can pave their long-term success in a sustainable manner.

Independent tutors are becoming increasingly professional, as more educators transition to full-time tutoring, leveraging the flexibility and scalability afforded by tutoring online.

However, many online tutors have been slow to adopt new technologies, often relying on traditional video conferencing tools like Zoom and Google Meet, which were designed for meetings rather than tutoring. This has led to compromised teaching experiences.

More importantly, tutors have only recently begun adopting technology to streamline their business operations, allowing them to concentrate on their tutoring effectiveness and business growth.

Conclusion

We live in interesting times.

On one hand, discussions around AI tutors have revived the age-old man vs. machine debate; on the other, the limitations of AI, often only partially reliable, lacking creativity, and still in its infancy, become increasingly apparent when compared to the personalized learning offered by human tutors.

Undoubtedly, the future of tutoring is online. The extent to which the market will be captured by AI tutors remains uncertain. However, it can be said with strong conviction that in a world full of AI tutors, the value of human tutoring will only grow in importance and prestige, making the latter a highly sought after, premium service.

While AI and technological advancements will continue to shape the tutoring landscape, the value of human connection, adaptability, and tailored teaching will remain indispensable. Whether you choose to tutor through a marketplace, join a center, or go independent, remember that the key to success lies not just in the method you choose but, in your ability, to continually evolve, professionalize your tutoring methods, focus on your students and meet their needs in this ever-changing, highly competitive world.

Choose wisely, teach passionately, and adapt boldly, because the future of learning is in your hands.
