General chip times reduce, but power remains high – up to 75 weeks

Lead times in most chip categories are coming down, reports Electronics Weekly (EW), except for power management which is still up to 75 weeks.

The market for discrete devices and optoelectronics is currently undergoing a period of market readjustment, resulting in higher inventory levels, reports Electronics Weekly. Despite this, demand from automotive, industrial, and energy sectors is stabilising or increasing. As a result, lead times have decreased, with the exception of power technologies which are still limited until 1H 2023. 16 Bit #chips from TI and #Microchip are still at 70 and 75 weeks respectively...

British defence companies are aiming to...

British defence companies are aiming to increase their partnerships or create new investments in India, as part of their larger endeavours to diversify their supply chains, claims a UK industry body.

According to Reuters, the UK-India Business Council (UKIBC) CEO Richard McCallum told them, “We have got a group of 22 British defence companies, with collective revenues of about $60 billion, really focused on doing business with and in India.” McCallum did not specify which firms will make new investments or which Indian companies they might be in discussions with.

Reuters reports that Britain has sought to deepen economic, defence and security ties with India, committing to closer links with the Indo-Pacific region, while casting China as an “epoch-defining challenge” to the world order. BAE Systems has a presence in India’s aerospace and defence sector, while MBDA has a venture with Larsen & Toubro. Rolls-Royce (RR.L) is exploring collaborations on jet engine technology...

The EU needs China’s market and is playing a “dangerous game”...

A report by the Global Times, a daily tabloid that is an arm of People's Daily, the Communist Party’s mouthpiece, claims the #EU needs #China’s market and is playing a “dangerous game” amid the U.S. policy of sanctions and decoupling.

It writes, “Today the share of the EU in global production capacity is about 10 percent. By adopting the #ChipsAct, the EU aims to increase this share to 20 percent. One question worth considering is how to absorb newly-added capacity. The glory of some #European electronics giants like Nokia and Ericsson seems to have faded compared with competitors in the #US and #Asia. Partly due to shrinking demand from Europe’s electronics industry, some European chipmakers have shifted manufacturing out and focus mainly on the semiconductor consumption market in the Asia-Pacific region...

Procuring electronic components for products has been a struggle...

“Procuring electronic components for products has been a struggle. Domestic labor shortages have also made maintaining experienced folks on the production line challenging. We’re addressing the supply-chain issues by sourcing some components from the open market and purchasing them well in advance. So, we’ve increased labor rates, and we’re in the process of adding a new production line with cobots.” – Nathan Andaya, PMP, MBA, EE, Director Techline strategic business unit, LINAK U.S.

He was among several panelists who described their supply chain problems to Design World, who added, “To be clear, most industry experts we surveyed for the 2023 Design World Trends issue don’t expect a fully normal supply chain or labor market for another year.”

Tom Schroeder , Executive V.P., PBC Linear, said that while in most sectors the supply chain is starting to normalize, “Electronics components are still lagging behind the rest of the sectors … and that’s causing complications and production delays.”

According to Jeremy Miller, President, Motion Plus, electronics manufacturers also face “obscene lead times for component parts”...
