What electronic components are likely to be most in demand in 2024??

We are expecting a surge in demand for various key components primarily across our growth sectors – IoT, renewable energy, healthcare, wearable technology, and the automotive industry, especially electric vehicles (EVs). And military and defence, of course. Consequently, microcontrollers, power management ICs, SOCs, low-power sensors, imaging chips, display technologies, and advanced connectors will continue to be in high demand.?The tremendous levels of innovation within Generative AI applications will push the demand for chips from Invidia, Google, GraphCore, and AMD into so far uncharted waters. The US is restricting AI chip sales and prices for the devices remains high. Currently, very few AI chips are making it into the open market; there is clearly stockpiling. This opens the industry to the possibility of an AI chip bubble. Watch this space in 2024 and plan for some price rises...

Can India grow its 3% share of global electronics manufacturing?

JAN 2, 2024

India is aiming to become a hub for electronics system design and manufacturing. This move may be pivotal for the electronics sector, particularly for semiconductor manufacturing, an area where India currently holds a 3% share of global production, reports The India Times. The Indian government has recognised the strategic and economic importance of establishing a robust domestic electronics component ecosystem. Initiatives date back to the 1960s, with the Electronic Committee under Homi Bhabha emphasising the sector’s significance. The establishment of the Department of Electronics (DoE) in 1970 marked a further step in this direction. Despite initial high import duties to discourage component imports, India’s domestic production struggled to meet demand, leading to a gradual reduction in import taxes during the 1980s. Companies like HCL and...

Samsung and SK Hynix boost semiconductor investments

DEC 30, 2023

In a significant move for the electronics industry, Samsung and SK hynix have announced plans to ramp up their investments in semiconductor equipment in 2024. 三星电子 is set to increase its investment by 25%, reaching approximately 27 trillion won, while SK Hynix plans a dramatic 100% increase from this year’s investment, aiming for around 5.3 trillion won (1 trillion South Korean Won is $777,139,650). This financial commitment is not just about increasing expenditure; it’s also about expanding production capabilities. Samsung Electronics is targeting a 24% increase in both DRAM and NAND production for 2024. This includes substantial investments in various DRAM wafer sizes, such as 250,000 of the 16-15nm level (D1z), 180,000 of the 14nm level (D1a), and 230,000 of the 13-12nm level (D1b). SK Hynix, on the other hand, is aiming to restore DRAM production to levels seen before last year’s production cuts. The focus for SK Hynix lies in enhancing the production scale of advanced DRAM types, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM)...

Intel will receive $3.2 billion in Israeli funding to build chip factories

DEC 29, 2023

Intel’s significant investment in Israel’s technology sector marks a momentous occasion, as the company has committed to establishing a new $25 billion chip plant, supported by a $3.2 billion grant from the Israeli government, reports Reuters. This investment represents the largest by a company in Israel and signals a robust vote of confidence in the region’s burgeoning tech industry. This development is particularly notable for engineers and professionals in the electronics industry. Notably, Intel’s presence in Israel, dating back to 1974, has been marked by innovations such as the Centrino chip and Core processors, both developed in the country. 英特尔 expansion plan includes the construction of a new plant at its Kiryat Gat site, which is already home to an existing chip manufacturing facility. This initiative is part of Intel’s broader strategy to strengthen the global supply chain and maintain its competitive edge in the semiconductor industry...

Vietnam ascends as electronics manufacturing hub

DEC 28, 2023

Vietnam is rapidly establishing itself as a major player in global electronics manufacturing, capitalising on the shift of production bases away from China. This transformation is driven by the country’s advantageous use of free trade agreements, attractive tax incentives, and competitive labour costs, making it an attractive destination for international investment. A pivotal event in this emerging narrative, according to Supply Chain Dive, was a high-profile meeting in September between U.S. President Joe Biden, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chính, and executives from leading technology firms like Google, Amkor, Intel, and others. This gathering highlighted Vietnam’s growing importance in U.S.-Vietnam trade relations, particularly in the electronics and semiconductor industries. The shift from China, a dominant force in Asia’s contract production, is due to deteriorating U.S.-China trade relations, prompting American companies to seek more favourable manufacturing environments...

AOG Technics in dawn raid, one arrest

DEC 19, 2023

The UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has launched a major criminal investigation into AOG Technics Ltd, an aircraft parts supplier. This action follows a raid in London, where one individual was arrested, reports Reuters. AOG Technics has been a key player in the global aviation supply chain since 2015, providing parts for the world’s leading passenger and cargo aircraft engines, the CF56 and CF6. These parts were sold not just in the UK but globally, to companies that install airline parts, as well as UK airlines, maintenance providers, and parts suppliers. The UK’s aviation industry, significantly impacted by this scandal, is worth £34.5 billion. The investigation was prompted by alerts issued earlier this year by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the US Federal Aviation Administration, and the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency . These alerts were directed at aviation businesses that might have bought or installed AOG’s parts...
