LED chip prices see 3–5% surge, reports TrendForce

LED supply chain companies are raising prices due to the high demand for LED chips, reports? TrendForce Corporation .

In recent years, heightened industry competition has forced some companies to exit the LED chip market, explains TrendForce. Most of the suppliers who have remained in the market have reported consistent losses over an extended period, causing them to transition into more profitable sectors such as display technology. This shift resulted in reduced supply and correspondingly lower inventory levels...

US chip giant, 德州仪器 (TI), is cutting prices on China’s mainland in a bid to win greater market share, reports? DIGITIMES Asia .

A source close to the company said that when chips were in short supply in the past two years, it was difficult for customers to buy chips from Texas Instruments, which accelerated the process of end users in China adopting chips produced by Chinese manufacturers, and caused TI to lose part of the market.

苹果 added five new suppliers in mainland China last year but cut eight, while production bases in India rose to 14 from 11, signaling the iPhone maker’s accelerated expansion in the country, according to a report by the South China Morning Post SCMP .

Globally, Apple added 18 new suppliers while cutting 19, resulting in a small adjustment in its supply chain, but one that has made India a clear winner, writes SCMP.

While this is a significant shift, China remains a production stronghold with 151 of Apple’s 188 suppliers having facilities in the country.

Apple’s shift from China to India is a long-term strategy aimed at diversifying its supply chain. While completely eradicating reliance on China may not be feasible, increasing production in India offers Apple a more diversified supply base...

三星电子 plans to invest 300 trillion won ($230 billion) over the next 20 years in a new domestic production hub in South Korea, with other manufacturers showing an interest in developing a new chip-supply ecosystem.

Billed as what will become the “world’s largest” chipmaking plant, the plan to build the hub in Pyeongtaek, Seoul metropolitan region, is clearly sending ripples of excitement through the industry. Samsung, the world’s top memory chipmaker, plans to build the so-called ‘gigactory’, a simulation of the so-called ‘gigacities’, with semiconductor fabrication lines, test lines, and assembly lines; advanced clean rooms, a hydrogen fluoride treatment facility, and various engineering centers. It plans to produce chips for mobile devices, data center systems, and automotive applications.

MAY 31, 2023

Motives in the tech competition between the United States and China pose increasingly difficult policy issues for other economies, according to a detailed new report by Australia’s Lowy Institute.

“Rising subsidies in the big world economies and the entanglement of national security and commercial motives pose difficult policy issues for countries such as Australia, which cannot match the subsidies provided by the great powers. US–China competition over advanced semiconductors is an awkward instance of such entanglement of national security and commerce, of subsidies and export denials.,” says Dr John Edwards, Lowy Institute Senior Fellow...
