Powerdot and Biedronka are teaming up to equip 600 supermarket parking lots in Poland with fast chargers for electric and hybrid cars by 2024. The chargers will be capable of charging up to three cars simultaneously and will be implemented by Powerdot. This joint initiative aims to build the largest DC electric car charging system in Poland and will triple the existing infrastructure for fast charging in just a few months. Each charger will have a power of 120 kW, enabling quick charging in about 20-30 minutes, and will support three types of connectors. The project aims to provide widespread access to charging networks, addressing the shortage of fast chargers in Poland. Powerdot will handle the maintenance and operation of the chargers.

Gireve’s view: Eastern Europe’s emobility market is less saturated that Western Europe’s market; This is why it is increasingly appealing to Western European CPOs. However,?the EV market is still lagging compared to countries like France or Germany. Still, Actors like Power Dot are using their experience to develop even faster countries like Poland. This will help Poland achieve the target of 100,000 charge points by 2030 set by PSPA (Polish EV Outlook 2023).

CPOs must take the right approach to invest at the opportune moment and capitalize on the most favorable charging spots. A good understanding of EV driver needs is essential to a successful entry in the market. Our consulting team assists CPOs in expanding their network through data analysis and expertise, enabling them to define the most effective strategy for EV chargers roll-out.

GRIDSERVE secures over £500 million in green financing, the largest debt raise for a privately-owned charge point operator. The funding will support the expansion of Electric Super Hubs nationwide, addressing range anxiety and boosting the UK's EV charging network. This milestone highlights GRIDSERVE's commitment to sustainable transport and the fight against climate change. Toddington Harper, Founder and CEO of GRIDSERVE, expresses confidence in their Sun-to-Wheel strategy and future plans for electric vehicle adoption. In comparison, Instavolt raised £110M in debt in June 2022.

Gireve’s view: Running EV charging operations requires a significant capital investment, particularly when it comes to fast chargers. Fast chargers play a crucial role in facilitating the widespread adoption of EVs and enhancing the overall driving experience. The installation cost of a fast charger falls within the range of €100,000, making the operation of an EV charger network a significant capital investment.

Using this capital wisely is crucial for ensuring the profitability of a charging network operation. That's why our consulting team is committed to assisting our clients with valuable insights and expertise in determining the optimal locations for deploying EV chargers. We consider factors such as appropriate sizing and power output based on current usage patterns.

Cre: Charge+

Charge+ aims to establish 30,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points in Southeast Asia by 2030, with 16,000 planned for Singapore alone. They have already installed 1,000 charging points in Singapore and secured a tender to add 4,000 more. The company supports Singapore's goal of phasing out conventional vehicles by 2030.

Gireve’s view:?Asian countries are in many ways on the front line of climate challenges, hosting 93 of the 100 most polluted cities and six of the top ten countries most affected by climate risks. (McKinsey ). The transport sector is among the largest sources of greenhouse emissions, this is why countries worldwide have set ambitious targets for emission-free transportation. Singapore's target of phasing out combustion car sales by 2030 matches most advanced countries such as Iceland, Sweden and the Netherlands. The Singapore government is pushing electric vehicles (EVs) uptake, offering incentives and expanding the charging network with a plan to deploy 60,000 charging points at public car parks and private premises by 2030 (ITA )

At Gireve, we believe that the uptake of e-mobility is fostered by public-private partnerships, with incentives and standardization from the government and investment from private companies. This is why we firmly support initiatives such as this one. Our consulting team shares valuable expertise with countries worldwide, drawing from our extensive European experience in the EV charging ecosystem.

Norway's EV charging journey: lessons for success in a rapidly growing market

Norway leads in EV adoption, with 80% of new cars purchased being electric. The country's incentives and reliable power grid have contributed to its success. However, scaling the EV charging infrastructure has been challenging. Early actions and optimized locations enhance customer satisfaction. Competition is increasing, and tailoring offerings to customer needs can boost utilization. To succeed in the EV charging market, McKinsey says businesses must prepare for speed and scale, with a comprehensive strategy and robust operational capabilities. Examining Norway's experience can help avoid pitfalls and secure a leading position in the evolving EV charging infrastructure landscape.

Gireve’s view: Norway's progress in eMobility serves as an excellent real-world testing ground for other nations to adopt best practices and prepare for potential challenges. While Norway possesses unique attributes, such as a dependable electricity supply, a comparatively smaller population, and a significant number of individuals residing in homes with parking facilities, insights can still be gained from their experiences in public charging and changes in vehicle usage. The key outputs of McKinsey’s paper all go in the direction of customer expectation evolution as new location open and new actors enter the market.

The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of a clearly defined strategy, supported by market information. Thanks to Gireve's extensive coverage across Europe, our consulting team can leverage and examine data from different countries to pinpoint emerging trends and user behaviors. This data is crucial for ecosystem participants aiming to deliver an optimal charging experience to their customers, especially as expectations continue to rise.

Europe and UK enact game-changing laws to enhance EV charging experience

Europe and the UK are taking steps to enhance the electric vehicle charging experience. The European Parliament approved rules mandating 400-600 kW charging stations every 60 km by 2028 and simpler charger payments. They also aim to create a public database of charging stations. In parallel, the UK proposed rules to achieve 99% charging station reliability and similar payment and database requirements as the EU. These initiatives are set to improve the EV charging experience for Europeans and potentially influence global EV charging practices.

Gireve’s view: Even after Brexit, the UK and EU are moving in similar directions concerning EV charging. Having a well-implemented charging network that is reliable and offers easy and seamless access is crucial for enhancing EV adoption across Europe. As a roaming platform, we believe that interoperable solutions are key to an enhanced experience, facilitating accessibility of all networks across Europe.?

On another note, using the power output of charging stations as a target, rather than just the number of charge points, is much better. This approach gives more importance to high-power charging networks that can accommodate dozens of vehicles per day, as opposed to slow chargers that can only handle a few.

Properly dimensioning a charging area is a vital aspect for Charging Point Operators in their operational processes. At Gireve, we are pleased to collaborate with CPOs to provide them insightful data and indicators. This helps them understand and enhance their operations.
