500,000 EV charging points installed in Europe: a milestone for sustainable transport

The European Union reached a milestone with 500,000 EV charging points installed. The Netherlands, France, and Germany have the highest number of charging points. This success calls for further expansion of charging infrastructure in Europe. As a reminder, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) estimated 3M public chargers to be required by 2030 in Europe in their Masterplan.

Gireve’s View: It's truly remarkable to celebrate the achievement of surpassing the half-million mark for chargers across Europe. As we mentioned last month when France reached 100,000 charging points, it's crucial to continuously monitor the service level provided by these stations. At Gireve we strongly believe that public charging needs to be open to roaming across Europe, to provide EV drivers with the finest and most straightforward service. That's why we have developed our consulting services, helping clients strategically deploy EV chargers at optimal locations. Our goal is to maximize return on investment and ensure heightened satisfaction for EV drivers.

Major expansion of public charging infrastructure in Berlin and London

French corporation TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with Berlin to install 500 public AC charge points over the next three years, operating them until 2030. For a few years, TotalEnergies has also secured contracts for charging networks in various cities (Amsterdam, Brussel, Paris, Singapore, Wuhan, etc.) and plans to divest from petrol stations in some countries due to the phasing out of internal combustion engines by 2035.?

Also, in London, more than 80 rapid charging points will be installed across the city, with bids invited from suppliers. The initiative aims to support the shift to decarbonizing road transport and facilitate the growth of electric vehicles.

Gireve’s View: These news highlights a growing trend in major cities worldwide: an extensive deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The high population density of these cities emphasizes the significance of public charging as a crucial factor in transitioning from traditional combustion engines to electric vehicles. While public transportation and micro-mobility solutions decarbonize urban transportation, they can not fully replace individual cars. With adequate charging facilities, EV owners living in cities will no longer worry about home charging. Furthermore, given that large cities such as Paris attract a significant number of tourists, seamless charging experiences heavily rely on interoperability.

CharIN Association acknowledges interest in Tesla's NACS and supports its standardization

Ford and General Motors have recently announced their switch to NACS connector, the Tesla's North America Charging Standard (NACS).

CharIN, The Charging Interface Initiative serves as a leading industry association bringing a global approach to decarbonization through the electrification. CharIN first promoted the CCS standard but as the trio (Ford, GM and Tesla) is expected to hold the majority of the market of all-electric cars in North America, CharIN now expresses support for standardizing NACS and emphasizes the importance of open charging standards. The association plans to convene a task force to align requirements and submit NACS to the standardization process.

This is a huge move for the American industry, as more and more OEM discuss the possibility of switching their connector to NACS, which is smaller and more practical to use than CCS. The objective remains to facilitate a smoother transition and avoid individual agreements with Tesla. Cooperation between Tesla and other manufacturers may be on the horizon.

Gireve’s View: This news raises an important question, beyond the choice of connector: the need for standardization in the market and how it should be implemented. Is it beneficial to have all industry players rally around a single standard? Should it be driven by EV-related associations or public institutions? At Gireve, we believe that standardization leads to simplicity for EV drivers. In Europe, we witnessed the emergence of multiple connectors initially, but eventually, a European directive mandated CCS compliance. As a roaming platform, we adapt our services to align with the current market conditions. That's why we adopted the open protocol OCPI and joined the working group, collaborating with industry stakeholders to enhance it collectively.

The 36th Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition (EVS36), organized by EDTA, is a premier international conference focused on electric transportation and technologies. It took place this week.

It offers compelling presentations, a cutting-edge exposition, and networking events. EVS36 aims to showcase industry innovation, provide learning opportunities, and promote electric transportation to the public and media. The event invites global leaders to discuss and shape the future of e-mobility, featuring technology advancements, policy announcements, and business showcasing.

It is held in Sacramento because the city has been recognized as an "E-Visionary" for its leadership in electric vehicle deployment and support. The city has been actively promoting electric drive adoption since 1994 and has implemented initiatives such as curbside charging and public EV charging.

Gireve’s View: EVS holds great significance for the e-mobility industry, and our participation at EVS36 marked our first presence at a US event, sparking promising discussions. If you missed us at EVS36, don't worry! While the event has come to a close, we will be participating in another prestigious US event this September. We can't wait to connect with you and showcase our latest solutions. Book your appointment now!

MARKET TRENDS

Survey reveals consumer attitudes and barriers towards Battery Electric Vehicles in the EU

The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) conducted a survey to understand consumers' intentions and challenges regarding the adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in ten EU countries. The survey revealed that 41% of participants are interested in BEVs, with the main advantage being their positive impact on the climate. Price and insufficient range were identified as the main barriers. The report suggests that affordable BEV models with a range of 300 km or more are needed. Information on costs, ownership, and available subsidies can help potential drivers. The survey also highlights the importance of improving the recharging infrastructure and addressing underrepresented groups among BEV drivers.

Gireve’s View: In the grand scheme, what truly counts is the satisfaction of electric vehicle drivers and the acceptance of those who haven't made the switch yet. As an industry, we are collectively striving to deliver exceptional and dependable services that facilitate an effortless and smooth EV charging experience. To enhance their network, we diligently observe and evaluate the quality of service provided by Charge Point Operators (CPOs), benchmarking it against prevailing market standards.
