Waze, the popular navigation app, has just announced a game-changing update for electric vehicle drivers. With the latest feature, you can enter your EV car and plug type into the Waze app to locate charging stations along your route. This new feature will be available globally in the coming weeks, providing users with up-to-date and accurate information on charging station locations. Thanks to local Map Editors, EV data is reviewed and updated in real-time, ensuring that you have the most comprehensive and reliable information available.

Until now, finding charging stations has been a major pain point for EV drivers due to inconsistent and outdated information.?

Gireve's view: As we strive towards achieving the energy transition, one of the major challenges is matching EV sales growth with charging station deployment. Charging stations need to be visible to EV drivers and be located at the right place delivering the adapted power. The location and characteristics of these charging stations have now become crucial factors for charging operators.

It's essential for operators to develop their charging network where it is most needed, equipped with the most relevant features. This is where our consulting services come into play, as we assist them in their deployment strategy to ensure the best possible outcome.

Quebec expands electric vehicle charging network to achieve ambitious e-mobility targets

Quebec is stepping up its efforts to promote e-mobility with a $60 million investment to expand its network of fast charging stations by 30% to over 1,200. The government's initiative aims to have 1.6 million electric vehicles registered by 2030 as part of the Plan for a Green Economy 2030 (PEV 2030). In the latest move, 367 charging stations of 100 kilowatts or more will be added to Hydro-Québec's Circuit électrique network across 131 sites in the province. These new stations will contribute to 40% of all public charge points in Canada located in Quebec. The Environment Minister Benoit Charette hopes to launch the government's next strategy on electric vehicle charging soon. This expansion is a significant milestone towards achieving Quebec's ambitious e-mobility targets.

Gireve's view: To achieve a sustainable transportation industry, the establishment of a fast-charging network is a fundamental component that applies to all countries with ambitious decarbonization targets. Our consulting team collaborates closely with charge point operators, landowners, and investors to deliver top-quality data-driven support for the efficient implementation and acceleration of their deployment strategies.

Eurelectric's key recommendations for sustainable e-Mobility in Europe

Eurelectric, the Union of the Electricity Industry, has released a paper and presented it at eVision 2023. It lays out six essential recommendations for policymakers to maintain the growth of e-mobility in Europe, with a goal of achieving a net-zero emission society by 2050.

One of the recommendations is the expansion of charging infrastructure, supported by market-based targets and streamlined permitting processes. Linked to this one, another recommendation is the development of smart grid technologies, with the promotion of smart charging infrastructure and the encouragement of bi-directional charging technologies. Also, Eurelectric emphasizes the need for policymakers to focus on digitalization and data interoperability to put the customer at the center. This includes providing information on available chargers, tariffs, and amenities, making it easier for customers to access charging infrastructure.

Gireve's view: We fully support Eurelectric's recommendations for sustainable e-Mobility in Europe. We believe that the expansion of charging infrastructure, development of smart grid technology, and focus on digitalization and data interoperability are essential steps towards achieving a net-zero emission society by 2050. Gireve is working on those 3 topics in its everyday operation either via its roaming service, innovation projects or with its consulting services.

Quote from Marion Arlès, Head of Innovation at Gireve, “On the occasion of the eVision event held in Brussels, Eurelectric members discuss the main challenges power sector has to face to accelerate e-mobility. Electrification of the transport sector is key in Europe’s quest for energy independence and decarbonization.”

ACEA welcomes European Parliament's adoption of the Data Act for fair sharing of vehicle data

The European Parliament's adoption of the Data Act has been welcomed by the ACEA (The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association), a move that will support the growth of a wide range of services across the entire automotive industry. This new law provides users with control over the full range of data shared by their vehicle, with no exceptions, ensuring that vehicle manufacturers will not have any advantage over other data recipients. However, ACEA believes that the implementation and understanding of its impact should be the authorities and industry's main focus. Looking ahead, the industry would welcome guidelines on the application of the Data Act.

Gireve’s view: As a data services provider, we acknowledge that vehicle data plays a crucial role in delivering a seamless experience for drivers through various services. As the amount of data increases significantly, it becomes more interesting to analyse it and imagine new relevant services, but it also raises questions on data security. How can data privacy be ensured? As more and more data is available, the key is to know how to use it and cross the right sources to make the right conclusions. Regarding how EV charging data can help businesses, you can check out our webinar from last year.

EU Council adopts AFIR regulation for reducing CO2 emissions from new vehicles

On Tuesday, March 28th, the European Parliament, Council, and European Commission have reached an agreement on the long-time coming Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) as part of the "Fit for 55" program, an overarching piece of legislation that will bring local EV charging networks together into a harmonized, pan-European EV charging system. The AFIR regulation will introduce significant changes to emissions standards for new cars and vans, with a goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 55% and 50%, respectively, by 2034. The regulation will also encourage the sales of low-emission vehicles from 2025 to 2029, and mandate 100% CO2 emission reductions for new cars and vans by 2035. The AFIR includes a review clause to assess progress towards these targets and determine the need for revisions by 2026. The regulation will also set national targets for infrastructure for alternative fuels, requiring electric charging stations for cars every 60 km (120 km for trucks and buses), and demand clear pricing and user-friendly recharging stations.

Gireve’s view:?The AFIR has been awaited by all players of the industry, and it is a great achievement to see this first step towards a unified EV charging network across the entire EU, with a focus on information transparency. These measures aim to accelerate the transition towards zero-emission mobility while ensuring continued innovation in the industry. The EU is taking a proactive approach on e-mobility and positioning itself as a leader in sustainable transportation. As a participant of the Sustainable Transport Forum and signatory of a position paper regarding the importance of including roaming in the AFIR, we take part in debates and we look forward to the following steps.?

Quote from ChargeUp Europe: “We need a lot more chargers of all types to serve all the many different types of EV users. We need to ensure especially that earlier stage markets have the support they need to catch up, so a 2-speed Europe divide does not widen. New challenges will emerge.”

As ChargeUp Europe mentioned, challenges will emerge to provide smooth, seamless, zero emission mobility for all Europeans, and to ensure that EV sales and EV infrastructure develop at the same pace. This is why we commit to realizing these objectives while simultaneously ensuring exceptional charging experiences for electric vehicle drivers, as we believe that a seamless EV Charging network in EU will require a comprehensive range of services, including roaming, data services and expert analyses.
