Google Maps introduces new features to make electric vehicle driving easier
Google has announced new Maps features to make driving electric vehicles easier. The features are designed for drivers with vehicles that have Google built-in. Maps will suggest the best charging stops on any trip that requires a charging stop. The 'very fast' charging filter will help users easily find stations that have chargers of 150 kilowatts or higher. The features are compatible with some Renault, Polestar, Volvo, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Honda electric vehicles. Maps will also show charging stations in search results when places like supermarkets have charging stations on-site.
Gireve's view: Making EV charging stations more visible and more accessible is a prior challenge to achieve the energy transition. The location and the characteristics of charging stations are becoming key for charging operators.
Operators need to develop their network in the right location, with the most relevant features. This is why we help them in their deployment strategy with our consulting services. To keep having the best reliable infrastructure, we also created the independent quality score for charging infrastructures with the consulting agency Mobileese .

MARKET TRENDS
Saudi Arabia accelerates investment in electric vehicles to achieve ambitious goals
Saudi Arabia is looking to invest in electric vehicles to upgrade its automotive industry and promote renewable energy use. The country aims to become an EV manufacturing hub by producing 500,000 cars by 2030. This move is part of the Saudi Green Initiative, which aims to achieve net zero by 2060 and reduce carbon emissions by 278 million tons per annum by 2030. Saudi Arabia has already invested $2bn in Lucid Motors and signed an agreement with Canoo to distribute its vehicles in the country. Also, the Saudi Arabian electric vehicle strategy centers around establishing Ceer, an initiative that aims to manufacture 170,000 cars annually in collaboration with Taiwan's technology firm Foxconn and BMW. Ceer, which means "drive" or "go" in Arabic, is a crucial component of the plan.
Given the crucial role of oil in the country's economy, the shift towards electric vehicles could be seen as a significant departure from its traditional reliance on fossil fuels.
Overall, Saudi Arabia's investment in electric vehicles represents a strategic move to position the country in sustainable technologies and with a more diverse economy beyond its traditional dependence on oil.
Gireve's view: While not being first mover in the market, Saudi Arabia has a real ambition of becoming self-sufficient in terms of resource access. The country is investing a lot in battery production and in the establishment of its own EV manufacturer brand. To achieve a full energy transition, it will also be necessary for the Kingdom to invest in charging infrastructure to build a connected network.

Global electric vehicle sales surge in 2022
Global electric vehicle (EV) sales continued to grow in 2022, with a total of 10.5 million new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) delivered, an increase of 55% compared to 2021 (ICE-only vehicle sales declined by 7%). BYD is the top-selling brand in the world for New Energy Vehicle (NEV), and Tesla leading BEV sales with 1.31 million units sold. Rapid EV adoption in small auto markets boosted EV shares to 13% of global light vehicle sales, with Norway having the highest market share of 79% for BEVs. In 2023, global EV sales are expected to grow by 36% to 14.3 million, with BEVs reaching 11 million units and PHEVs 3.3 million units.

Gireve's view: It is no surprise that global EV sales have continued to grow in 2022, with an impressive increase compared to the previous year. This growth has been largely driven by a combination of government incentives and consumer demand. As we look ahead to 2023, we can expect this trend to continue, further cementing the shift towards sustainable transportation.
As EVs become more numerous, it is crucial to ensure easy and interoperable charging infrastructure worldwide, so that EV drivers can benefit from the same quality of service no matter where they are and no matter the charging solution they use. The next step will be to simplify the access of charging stations with Plug & Charge , and to avoid energy consumption peaks with smart charging .
Additionally to its roaming offer, Gireve develops a full range of Plug & Charge services for all players of the ecosystem. Moreover, Gireve initiated training sessions to understand Plug & Charge from non-technical perspectives. These sessions give participants a better vision of what is Plug & Charge, how it works and what strategic choices they have to make.

Motor Oil Hellas to roll out thousands of EV and hydrogen stations across Greece with EIB funding
Motor Oil Hellas, a Greek energy company, plans to develop an extensive network of electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refueling stations throughout Greece with the help of a €40 million, 10-year loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The project aims to deploy about 3,000 EV charging stations and infrastructures for hydrogen refueling. An estimated 49% of the project investment will be located on the Trans-European Network for Transport, and the charging stations will be public with open access. The EIB's dedicated package of support for the REPowerEU plan prioritizes EV-charging infrastructure as part of the goal to end the EU's dependency on fossil-fuel imports.
The project will contribute to the growth of relevant market segments for electric and hydrogen infrastructure, as well as the associated vehicles, leading to environmental benefits such as reduced air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and lower noise.
Gireve's view: The increasing investment from energy players is a good sign for e-mobility, as it will lead to a massive development throughout Europe and more smart charging projects to achieve a balance between energy production and consumption. Opening the stations through roaming is also key to a successful deployment. It will be interesting to see the services that will be offered on the network and how access to charging will be granted on the stations.?

Spanish Government eases authorization process for EV Charging infrastructure deployment
The Spanish government is simplifying the authorization process for electric vehicle charging infrastructure by introducing a Ministerial Order that allows the project owner to fulfill the requirements with a responsible declaration. The change is intended to clear a backlog of around 200 installation requests for electric vehicle charging stations on the state road network. The new Order will reduce administrative burdens and approval timeframes, facilitating the deployment of charging points. The modification is part of a series of measures included in the?to speed up electric vehicle deployment. The Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda Ministry has collaborated with the automotive and energy sectors to develop the Order.?
Gireve's view: Spain has a limited electric vehicle infrastructure, and its slow adoption rate is a cause for concern compared to other European nations. Despite this, the Spanish government is actively seeking to hasten the development of e-mobility. To promote the adoption of electric vehicles, European governments are offering various incentives and taking measures to support both the vehicles and the infrastructure required. For instance, the French government has recently introduced a decree aimed at lowering the cost of electricity used as fuel for electric vehicles. This measure will provide financial assistance to all electric charging infrastructure developers who purchase electricity for their charging services in 2023. Gireve, in order to assist its customers, provides content and training on subsidies across Europe to help them develop a market entry strategy.
