Maritime Security: Is the problem solved?

SECURITY ADVISORY: PIRACY – REVISION OF BMP 4 HIGH RISK AREA

As the High Risk Area is re-defined it both underlines the effectiveness of the Maritime Security Industries approach to piracy as well as the reduction in the requirement for PMSC services where vessels are outside of the high risk area.  Whether Somalian piracy is now safely contained for good is a debate for another time.  Security remains a challenge in some of the more sensitive parts of the Indian Ocean  as well as West Africa and the Malacca Straits where security issues have recently spiked.  Experience across all of these areas demonstrates that so long as the conditions for piracy exist such as poor local development, a lack of economic opportunity and weak or failed states then piracy will re-emerge over time.
